Barwon Heads Primary School Celebrates 150 Years with Community Day
Barwon Heads Primary School (BHPS) will mark its 150th anniversary with a
Community Day this Saturday 20 September and the whole community is invited to join in the celebrations.
The milestone recognises the school’s long history, which began in 1875 on two acres of land in Connewarre, where lessons were first delivered in a single schoolroom with the teacher’s residence attached.
Principal Rob Bennetts said the Community Day was an opportunity to reflect on the school’s past while showcasing the creativity of its current students.
“Reaching 150 years is a remarkable milestone and it’s been wonderful to see our children embrace the celebrations,” Mr Bennetts said.
“They’ve worked so hard to prepare displays and projects for the Community Day, and I know the community will really enjoy seeing the results.”
Highlights of the day include:
• A Walk Through Time Exhibition with photos and memorabilia from across the school’s history
• Displays from local artist Chris Stirk as well as long-serving community groups including the Friends of the Bluff; Talking Heads mag; Barwon Heads Association; local photographer Steve Arklay; artists Kay Drew and BJ O’Toole,
• A student art exhibition inspired by Geelong’s famous bollards hat originated in Barwon Heads.
• A coffee van, bake stall and barbecue.
Mr Bennetts said the anniversary demonstrated the strength of the school’s connection with the Barwon Heads community.
“Barwon Heads Primary School has always been more than classrooms and buildings; it’s been part of the fabric of this town. We hope the whole community including past students, teachers and anyone who’s had anything to do with the school over the years will join us,” he said.
The 150th Anniversary Community Day will be held on Saturday 20 September from 10am to 2pm at the Barwon Heads Primary School Gym. Entry is $5 per person.

Join us to welcome spring! We are having a fantastic speaker for our September meeting on Monday the 8th of September at the Barwon Heads Bowling Club 🌻

We are very excited to welcome Kate Seddon as our guest. She has been designing gardens and broader scale landscapes for close to 20 years across Melbourne as well as in coastal and regional locations. With a small team of landscape architects, designers and horticulturalists, the driving principle of the practice is that the gardens are designed for people to engage in, to bring them joy and to be useful spaces. Taking cues from the surrounds as well as from the architecture, there is a recognition of the inherent value of nature and of bringing garden spaces closer to and connected with the home.

Featured in books, magazines and on television, the gardens of KSLD have been open to the public on various occasions and believe there is great value in sharing these spaces and being open for discussion. Kate is also a regular guest lecturer and presenter on landscape design. KSLD frequently works in conjunction with leading architects and interior designers on projects ranging from small scale renovations to significant new house builds.
