Chateau’s magic dress up box. Finally one place for all my shirts dating back to the late 1800s. DJ Fi thinks it is ugly and she has a point. She also suggests that as it is so large, I might want to consider sleeping in it for the next couple of nights.

Australian-Sri Lankan baritone Kiran Rajasingam has been described as a rising star lauded for his “rich, velvety voice” and “impressive emotional impact” (Classic Melbourne).

Kiran performs regularly with the Opera Australia and state opera company Victorian Opera. Principal credits with Opera Australia include Councilman in Mizzy Mazzoli’s Breaking the Waves and Yamadori in Madama Butterfly at the Sydney Opera House. With Victorian Opera, Kiran’s engagements have included Herod (The Play of Herod), Station Master (Eucalyptus), Mr Waa (Parrwang Lifts the Sky), The King (Cendrillon), Ein Cappadocier (Salome), Mr Mayor (The Pied Piper) and Diener (Capriccio) under the baton of Simone Young. Kiran has a keen interest in new music, having originated roles in new operatic works by Deborah Cheetham Fraillon, Richard Mills, Gordon Kerry and Joseph Twist.

We're delighted to be working with Kiran for the first time in our Australian premiere production of 'Fat Pig' playing in June at fortyfivedownstairs with BK Opera.

When our lad turned down a drama scholarship to St Leonards in Year 8 with the simple reasoning that he thought he was more of a Sandringham College kind of guy, we promised him we would pay for his tertiary education.

At the time, we didn't envisage him getting into NIDA in Sydney. So while DJ Fi and I have been empty nesters for the past 15 months, we are as poor as church mice for another 18 months.

But now we have the luxury of time if not cash, and what better way to spend it than seeing live music, and as cheaply as possible.

This is a long-winded way of saying I have brought back a gig guide to The Modernist. It's focussed on contemporary classical as my colleagues in the Jazz category have modern jazz gigs well-covered.

Below is the link that will take you directly to my last show and the time when I began reciting details of some pretty decent gigs.

If you are an artist, venue or promoter and want to be included, DM me or email at [email protected].

Look left...look right...look left again...looks fairly safe to cross the internet superhighway. Hacked again, I almost lost faith. Too many accounts, how do you tag? Hey I sound like an old man. Which is what I've become since I last posted as The Modernist, or Cas, or Richard...

Four hours of modern jazz, contemporary classical, ambient, soundtracks. But remember, too much of The Modernist is barely enough.

I'm trying to write a job application and keep having to get up and do a dance of self-congratulation every time a good tune breaks through my consciousness and stops me from typing. Why?

"Gee, that's sounds good," I think, and I check what's playing, having forgotten what playlist I've put on (because I'm in that age bracket), and bloody hell, it's a tune from the next and 143rd edition of The Modernist. And I get up, step over the slumbering hound, and do a little gig. OK, I didn't write or play the music. I simply chose it. But someone has to.
