9 Ways to get more engagement on Video Calls!
Tired of seeing blank stares and muted mics on your video calls? Let's turn those virtual meetings into interactive, attention-grabbing sessions! Here are some surefire ways to keep your audience engaged and involved:
1 | Start with a Bang! 🎉
Kick off with an icebreaker or a fun poll to grab attention right away.
Use Visual Aids 📊 There are heaps of things you can do to break the ice!
2 | Ask Questions ❓
Pose open-ended questions and encourage responses. This keeps everyone on their toes and involved in the conversation. If it's a large group, get them to utilize the Chat function so you avoid either Radio Silence OR everyone trying to talk at once.
3 | Break it Up ⏰
Divide your presentation into segments with breaks or interactive activities in between to maintain interest. Think about breakout room activities you can do to get people engaging in smaller groups.
4 | Encourage Participation 💬
Use features like polls, chat, and reactions to get instant feedback and keep the dialogue going. Often if you don't clearly state that you want people to interact, they don't. Give clear instructions at the beginning with how you want them to interact.
5 | Use Names 🗣️
Address participants by name to make the interaction feel more personal and engaging. Watch out not to ask tough questions though as this may embarrass people and you don't want to do that.
6 | Share the Spotlight 🔄
Invite participants to share their thoughts, present their ideas, or lead a part of the discussion. If there are multiple topics that you are talking about, I suggest at the end of each topic, ask if anyone has any questions, comments or concerns.
7 | Be Energetic ⚡
Keep your energy levels high and your tone enthusiastic to keep your audience's attention glued to you. Being behind the screen can ZAP your energy, so make sure you are mixing things up with your speed, tone and intensity.
8 | Interactive Tools 🛠️
Utilize interactive tools like whiteboards, breakout rooms, and quizzes to keep the session dynamic and engaging. Make sure people don't come into your training knowing exactly what you're going to do because it is the same every time. Mix up the format.
9 | Death By PowerPoint
Slides can be a great asset to keep you on track and keep your audience visually engaged. They are not meant to be read word for word. If you audience wanted to have something read to them, they would have downloaded something on Audible.
9 | Follow-Up 📝
Send a follow-up email with key takeaways, asking for feedback and additional thoughts to keep the engagement going. Ask for feedback so you can continually improve.
Engaging your audience on video calls isn't just about delivering content—it's about creating an interactive experience that leaves a lasting impression.
