Parents and carers, get ready to feel empowered, not panicked.

Sarah Duncanson from PAEDS and Penny Blunden from Sick Happens have launched Prepared Not Scared, a new podcast created to offer support and clear guidance for managing children’s everyday illnesses and injuries—without the fear factor.

"Being a parent is scary enough without someone making you feel like every bad thing is going to happen to your child," says Sarah.

"We wanted to deliver information in a way that supported parents to manage inevitable illnesses and injuries - injuries that are a really natural part of childhood."

Each weekly episode guides parents and carers through common issues - from fevers to rashes to choking incidents.

With their shared backgrounds as paediatric nurses and fellow parents, Sarah and Penny bring both expertise and empathy to each discussion.

"Penny is a fellow paediatric nurse. We both have our masters in paediatrics as well. She has an incredible experience in the military sector, lots of experience in research around food allergy, emergency nursing, telehealth nursing, and now she runs her own business which teaches parents about how to manage inevitable illnesses in kids. She has a really empathetic approach to her teaching and she's such a wealth of knowledge.

"I've got extensive experience in paediatric critical care, medical retrieval and also the paediatric disability sector. And I also bring that rural aspect to the podcast as well because it's very different living rural and having sick or injured kids.

"Hopefully the combination means that we cover the huge range of parents and carers who might be listening."

This week's wrap up includes an extended interview with Vanessa Vazquez who founded Birds In The Bush, domestic violence advocates in Central West, NSW

Vanessa established Birds in the Bush in response to the region's domestic violence rates, which are double the state average. Vanessa highlighted that with over 65 per cent of incidents going unreported, the actual figures are likely much higher.

"The Central West NSW has double the state average of domestic violence incidents and their reported domestic violence incidents. We know that over 65 per cent of incidents are unreported, so our figures must be much higher. We feel that it is a huge problem for our region," says Vanessa.

Birds In The Bush is a volunteer organisation. It hosts an annual event to raise awareness and fundraise for local domestic violence services.

Last year's event with Rosie Batty raised $100,000, and similar goals are set for this year's event with Jelena Dokic.

"So far all our funding has gone to The Orchard which is (the only) refuge for women and children in Orange. In this last year, they've housed 118 women and 112 children escaping family violence."

Ceramic artist and TikTok sensation Shelby Sherritt Art has opened a ‘paint your own pottery’ studio in Ballarat, Victoria.

Shelby says the idea for The Pottage came to life after receiving numerous requests for workshops and studio visits.

The Pottage offers in-person ‘paint your own pottery’ sessions as well as a variety of bisque and ready to paint kits in the shop.

The Pottage is not just a business venture for Shelby. She hopes to fill a gap in the market and provide a service that has been missing in Ballarat, potentially boosting local tourism and contributing to the city’s reputation as an arts hub.

“... a lot of the time we have to travel to Bendigo, Geelong or Melbourne to do certain activities. Hopefully I can grant that access here in Ballarat,” says Shelby.

✨ You can listen to our interview with Shelby on the podcast ‘She Makes News’ or read the article on our website. ✨
