Barry McGuire, born October 15, 1935.
Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction” is one of the most iconic protest songs of the 1960s — a raw, urgent anthem that captured the turbulence of its time.
💣 Song Snapshot
• Released: July 26, 1965
• Written by: P.F. Sloan (at just 19 years old)
• Produced by: Lou Adler
• Album: Eve of Destruction
• Genre: Folk rock, protest song
• Length: 3:35
📈 Chart Impact
• Hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (US)
• Reached #3 in the UK & Australia
• Banned by some radio stations for its controversial lyrics — which only fueled its popularity
🧨 Themes & Lyrics
The song is a searing critique of:
• The Vietnam War and military draft
• Nuclear threat and Cold War tensions
• Civil Rights struggles and racial injustice
• Political hypocrisy and generational disillusionment
Opening lines like:
“The eastern world, it is explodin’ / Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’…”
set the tone for a track that pulls no punches.
🎤 Legacy
• Considered one of the first mainstream protest songs to top the charts
• Influenced artists like Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, and later punk and alt-rock voices
• Still resonates today as a time capsule of 1965’s anxieties and activism

Bob Hudson, born October 15, 1946.
Bob Hudson’s “The Newcastle Song” is a cheeky, satirical slice of 1970s Aussie culture that became a surprise chart-topper and a cult classic.
🎶 Song Snapshot
• Released: 1974 (recorded live)
• Chart Success: Hit #1 on the Australian Kent Music Report in 1975
• Also topped charts in New Zealand
• Award: Won Record of the Year at the 1975 Australian Record Awards
🏙 What’s It About?
Set in Newcastle, NSW, the song follows a young bloke named Norm and his mates cruising down Hunter Street in their “hot FJ Holden,” trying to pick up women. It pokes fun at working-class youth culture, with exaggerated Aussie slang and humorous storytelling.
“Don’t you ever let a chance go by, oh Lord…”
That line became a catchphrase in its own right — and was later spun off into a parody by Maureen Elkner called “Rak Off, Normie”.
📀 Album & Legacy
• Featured on the album The Newcastle Song, which includes other satirical tracks like Livin’ It Up on the Dole and Christened My Dog
• Re-released in 2023 with bonus tracks
• Still beloved for its nostalgic humor and local pride — especially in Newcastle
You can listen to the original performance on YouTube or stream the remastered album on Apple Music.

❤️ Song Snapshot
• Released: June 20, 1986
• Album: Into the Light
• Genre: Soft rock
• Written by: Chris de Burgh, inspired by his wife Diane
• Produced by: Paul Hardiman
📈 Chart Success

💬 Lyrics & Meaning
The song captures the awe of seeing a loved one in a new light — dressed up, radiant, unforgettable. One of its most quoted lines:
“The lady in red is dancing with me, cheek to cheek…”
De Burgh wrote it after realizing he’d never noticed what his wife wore when they went out — a moment of reflection that turned into a timeless tribute.
