What an incredible evening celebrating 50 years of Berowra Toastmasters!

It was wonderful to see so many former members, VIPs, friends and fellow Toastmasters from neighbouring Clubs come together to celebrate this very special milestone with us.

The evening was filled with amazing speeches, wonderful memories, plenty of laughter and a truly fantastic supper prepared by our members. Most importantly, it was a celebration of the people who have contributed to making Berowra Toastmasters the special Club it is today - across five remarkable decades.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a success, and to everyone who joined us to celebrate. Your presence made our 50th Anniversary truly memorable.

In August 2026, we honour five decades of communication, leadership, friendship and service to our community.

Since our charter in August 1976, hundreds of members have walked through our doors seeking to become better speakers, more confident leaders and stronger individuals. Along the way, they have found encouragement, laughter, lifelong friendships and a genuine sense of belonging.

Nervous before speaking? You're not alone! Try this 4-7-8 breathing technique: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat 3-4 times before taking the stage. This calms your nervous system and helps channel that adrenaline into positive energy. At Berowra Toastmasters, we provide a supportive environment to practice managing speech anxiety.

Did you know that communication is 55% body language, 38% tone of voice, and only 7% the actual words you use? Your posture, gestures, and facial expressions speak volumes before you say a word! At tonight's meeting, our members practiced "power posing" for 2 minutes before their speeches to boost confidence. Try this technique before your next presentation and let us know if you feel the difference!

Great leaders are great listeners! Active listening—focusing completely on the speaker, acknowledging their message, and responding thoughtfully—builds trust and understanding. Try this technique: In your next conversation, resist the urge to plan your response while the other person is speaking. Instead, focus entirely on understanding their perspective. How might this simple shift improve your leadership effectiveness?

This week's best response was about "the perfect sandwich" (who knew our VP Education had such passionate opinions about proper condiment layering?). Join us to try this fun, challenging exercise that builds confidence for job interviews, meetings, and everyday conversations!

Looking for the secret to instant connection with your audience? It's all in the eyes! Make meaningful eye contact with different people throughout your speech—aim to complete one full thought (5-8 seconds) while looking at one person before moving to another. This creates personal connections and builds trust with your entire audience. Try this technique at our next meeting!
