Monday Musing

People risking everything to do what they believe God has told them to do is what this ‘can’t put it down’ book is all about.

As you read Insane: stories of crazy Salvos who changed the world — you see that some went to prison even though what they did was right, others ensured that lives were physically saved by producing safety matches, a different group of Salvationists ensured that people producing tea received a fair trade and wage, one General even put together a pop group that skyrocketed Christian music into the mainstream music charts, women pioneered into uncharted waters by taking on leadership roles and there’s more!!!

Catherine and William Booth unleashed, under the direction of Jesus Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit, a mighty army of courage, faith, prayer, social action, innovation, love, grace, joy, persistence and ongoing learning.

And the first two photos of this post show that Major David Collinson, the co-writer of Insane, is keeping the, ‘change the world’ dream and vision alive as he links with motorcycle riders around Australia to raise funds to help the life-changing, God powered action happening today.

Nealson Munn and David bring to life some of the outrageously life-changing deeds of The Salvation Army from the past. As you read about this may God inspire you to be actively part of doing the same today. Different deeds but same intent and purpose driving us full steam ahead!

Salvos Publishing has reprinted this book already at least twice and we have sold out but is there a call for it be printed again or is it time to make a Kindle version?

Friday’s goldmine waiting to be mined

This book is a gem that keeps becoming more valuable each time it is read as General Burrows alludes to in her recommendation. It’s not about writing the vision. It’s all about living the vision!

Yes it was written a few years ago but that doesn’t make it irrelevant to today.

Many of us reading this post were created many, many years ago and I am sure none of us feel irrelevant for today - me included! 😂🥳

Actually I believe that the wisdom delivered by Commissioner Wesley Harris has increased in its magnitude of importance during these years.

I love the interview that Mal Davies does at the beginning of the book with Commissioner Harris — fabulous insights.

The photos are a lovely bonus and General Burrows’ recommendation alone is enough for us to race out and buy this treasure in book form.

At $5 this is a bargain priced goldmine just waiting to be mined.

I feel and believe that this is a top-notch significant Christmas present for us older ones — parents and grandparents — to give to our family who may be in their late teens or twenties, thirties and forties.

Obviously I am recommending that all of us read it.

Wednesday Wisdom

Excellent photos and spiritual insight.

God’s Redemption Plan using Isaiah 35 as the focal point.

During Lent, 2011, Lucille Turfrey travelled with two friends to Central Australia. Her collation of the photographs taken during the journey inspired her to relate redemption's story pictorially and share the blessings of what was a sacred journey - a journey made possible by the grace of God.

Isaiah 35 was selected as a focal point for The Sacred Journey, as its message is integral to the Bible's Gospel Story of Redemption, Isaiah the prophet-poet, understands the desert experience and knows where to find refreshing, renewing pools, and springs in the desert. (126pp)

Lieut-Colonel Lucille Turfrey has lived a long life filled with a deep relationship with God. We are thankful that she has shared some of her experiences and spiritual learning through this engaging book.

This is ideal for a pre-Christmas group or individual study.

The Privilege of Service

I wonder how many people really feel it is a privilege to serve others?

In spiritual gift surveys I have taken during the decades the gift of serving comes up for me a little way into my list. Definitely not in my top three.

However, I have noticed it seems to be a prominent gift for many in The Salvation Army and this makes sense. We place a very high value on giving to others, encouraging others, uplifting others, building capacity for living in others, doing the background supporting roles — serving!

However, I also have a memory of hearing the term in relation to people serving in the military and even this brings a connection to The Salvation Army. Our Red Shield Defence Personnel — Sallymen and Sallyma’ams serve and uphold military personnel even in the darkest times they encounter.

Commissioner Robert Street’s latest book brings us fantastic insights into his privilege of service throughout a few decades. It is a book full of feeling with story after story of his wide ranging experiences with others within his Salvation Army officership.

And Lindsay Cox’s book Still Serving tells many, many stories of service within the context of physical wars.

The two books are full of faith and hope in Jesus.

They are both available on Amazon with Commissioner Robert’s book also being sold in print form by Salvation Army Supplies and Trades around the world.

Fighting Friday

Some things are worth fighting about — especially in the context of The Salvation Army.

We are deeply involved in fighting for increased support for the marginalised, addicted and those who are disadvantaged in any way. Social justice is a key fight for us.

And vital for us is our fight for spiritual freedom for all through Jesus.

The three featured books today give huge impetus to our desire to fight for all the above. Be brave and dive into one or all three right now.

Thinking of Christmas — who in your family or friends would appreciate one of these as a gift?

All of these are available in print form from us at Salvos Publishing https://www.salvosonline.org.au/salvos-publishing

And in Kindle form from Amazon.

Worldwide Wednesday

With Remembrance Day coming up soon we feature today two books on the ministry of The Salvation Army in the Boer War and both world wars.

Authored by the bearded Lindsay Cox just $20 for Still Serving and $40 for Cuppa Tea, Digger. Still Serving was launched by the bearded Colonel Rodney Walters. Unbearded me was privileged to be part of the launch of Cuppa Tea, Digger?

P.S. overviews below. Both books are available in Kindle format on Amazon and in print form via this link https://www.salvosonline.org.au/salvos-publishing

Still Serving -
In The Salvation Army Red Shield Defence Services’ 125th year of serving the men and women of our Australian Defence Force, Lindsay Cox OAM, in this prequel to “Cuppa Tea, Digger?” has been tireless in his pursuit to record the history of The Salvation Army’s service.

It has been the courageous, kind and innovative ministry of these Salvo service men and women that this book explores – the names in this volume well-known to anyone that has a knowledge of Australian Salvation Army history. Lindsay vividly brings to life stories of comfort, support, courage and encouragement – stories that continue to inspire the current generation of Salvation Army Sallymen and Sallyma’ams.

Discover many interesting facts through this book including how the first Salvation Army recreation facility commenced and how the two enduring and endearing emblems, the ‘Hop In’ kangaroo and the Red Shield came about.

This book will be of great interest to historians and Salvos alike, and resonate with the families and friends of sailors, soldiers and aviators who still generously respond with thanks to the Salvos.

Cuppa Tea, Digger?
Based largely on more than 180 oral histories of Diggers and Salvos’ philanthropic Red Shield War Services (RSWS) who were there ‘on the ground’, during WWII, this book captures the courageous intergenerational service that led Australians to fully embrace the Salvos. (230pp)

The book buying adventure!!

What helps you to decide to buy a book?

Is it the genre - Christian, TSA, murder mystery, romance, biography, science fiction, non-fiction or another?

Is it the author? You’ve liked what you’ve read of theirs before so you’ll try another one?

Does the cover make a difference to your choice?

Or is it the blurb about the book that clinches the deal?

Maybe it is the reviews on books sites that trigger your interest — is it?

How much does a friend recommending a book influence your choice?

How much is price a factor?

Does seeing the author or the book on television or in the newspaper or on social media influence you?

Thank you to every one of you who have bought any of our Salvos Publishing books? We have no marketing budget so your recommendations to others — even sharing our posts on your Facebook feed, and in any Facebook groups you are in, is vital for our books to become more widely known.

Our aim is to present you with books that will strengthen your Christian faith as well as encouraging and inspiring you in your daily life adventure/journey with Jesus.

If you would share about our books with others this would be so helpful.

Putting short reviews of our books on book review sites is also hugely important. Thank you to those who do this.

Today I hope you enjoy the photos of a few covers and Salvos Publishing authors to brighten your day.

Friday Author Focus — Lindsay Cox

Salvos Publishing is so grateful for the books written and drawn by the multi-talented Lindsay Cox.

We hope you enjoy scanning through the photos and screenshots that present a smidgin of Lindsay’s skills and gifts.

From a Telecom technician, who was moonlighting as a jazz musician, left-handed trombonist and actor, while honing his comedic cartooning and formal artistry, to archivist, museum curator, author, bass drummer, public speaker, collector of military paraphernalia and Batman pieces and so much more.

He is a fun and knowledgeable bloke.

After clicking through the photos we invite you to check out his books https://www.salvosonline.org.au/salvos-publishing

Still Serving and Cuppa Tea, Digger? are also available on Amazon in Kindle format. Two great books to read especially around Remembrance Day.

Thank you Lindsay!

Worldwide Wednesday

Majors Daniel and Melissa Templeman Twells are currently serving God through The Salvation Army in Japan. This is their second stint of service in Japan and from an article in Salvos Online last year (click the link to go to the article) it seems to be energising them.

https://www.salvosonline.org.au/post/officers-serving-overseas-majors-daniel-and-melissa-templeman-twells

However, recently it was announced that Daniel and Melissa will soon be returning to Melbourne to take up new appointments.

A few years ago Salvos Publishing printed a holiness book with a difference by Daniel — Inside Out — A cross-cultural perspective on holiness.

It’s just $5 with us currently. This is a bargain price for a book that I believe will bring you bountiful blessing.

It was fabulous to have Colin and Sharon Stoodley help me celebrate turning 70 recently.

Sharon trained with Simone and me as part of the Joyful Evangelists cadets session in The Salvation Army training college from 1978-1980. Colin came to the college in 1979 as part of the Proclaimers of Salvation session.

Earlier this year Colin published an excellent book on Christian discipleship — The Genius in the Kingdom.

Even though it is slanted towards church planting there is nothing stopping us in established churches from pinching the advice and using it right where we are.

If you know Colin I am sure he won’t mind if you ask where you can purchase his book from a bookstore near you, however, you can go to Amazon for either the print or Kindle versions.

Colin is still building into The Salvation Army so don’t be surprised if you hear that he is a speaker at a TSA conference in your neck of the woods or online.

WoW Wednesday

It is wonderful that all the authors I have worked with are always so keen to promote their books with everyone they meet.

They have invested so much time into their writing I am sure it so encouraging when people buy their book. I know it brings a WoW to me.

Bryce Davies is one hugely enthusiastic person and we at Salvos Publishing are stoked to see how he is WoW energised in his book promoting.

On his recent holiday with the lovely Sue he sold books to strangers, friends and (gave one) to his brother — as the photos reveal.

He still has many more books to sell and if you live in Brisbane or are visiting we can put you in contact with him — just $25 for this story-filled book of life with Bryce.

We also have it for sale from our office at The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters in Melbourne.

https://www.salvosonline.org.au/salvos-publishing (please fill out the contact form and Kirralea will get back to you)

You can order by Phone: 03 8541 4569 and
