Industrial music pioneers Throbbing Gristle initially released their sophomore album “D.o.A. The Third and Final Report of Throbbing Gristle” in 1978. This essential, nauseating masterpiece has been masterfully restored and remastered by Chris Carter, the album comes as part of a flood of TG rereleases to mark TG’s return to Industrial Records after a 30 year hiatus.
‘The Third and Final Report of Throbbing Gristle’ famously includes a solo track from each of the four individual band members. Peter Christopherson’s “Valley of the Shadow of Death” and Cosey Fanni Tutti’s “Hometime” are both detached, atmospheric spoken word collages, while Genesis P-Orridge’s “Weeping” is a sorrowful anti-love song. By sharp contrast, Chris Carter’s “AB/7A” is a vibrant, chipper slice of futuristic instrumental synth pop, almost fit to soundtrack a Tomorrowland ride. Essential stuff. One of TG’s grimmest, most disturbing records, “D.o.A. The Third and Final Report” is easily one of their most compelling.

We just had a visit from local troubadour, Jerrah Patston, who dropped off some copies of his new album, Abandoned Cricket Games.
“Beloved in his local Blue Mountains, Jerrah Patston writes songs possessed of a beautiful naivety, boiling down each subject to his own inimitable view.
Jerrah has an ear for a catchy melody and the unusual ability to communicate the universal through the very specific.
Writing in detail about daily life, Jerrah’s songs find the listener relating to thoughts about dodgem cars, Wings, construction sites and ten-pin bowling they did not realise they shared.
A legendarily spontaneous live performer, each moment on stage with Jerrah has no future or past, drawing audiences right into the moment.
His third LP, Abandoned Cricket Games, was recorded over two days at Frying Pan Studios in Berriedale, Tasmania, using the ex-Abbey Road REDD.17 recording console.
The album features Jerrah on vocals, percussion and melodica, backed by collaborators Sam Worrad (guitar) and Aether Tabris (piano). It is releasing on Darren Hanlon’s Flippin Yeah Records on Saturday August 9.
The album gorgeously documents minor catastrophes (and occasional triumphs…), in the classic tradition of folk-rock songs about disaster and disappointment.”
For the next reissue in Mr Bongo’s Cuban Classics series, we look to Raúl Gómez’s entrancing 1977 Instrumental album. Presenting a unique blend of orchestral disco and jazz-funk, with Afro-Cuban flavours and soundtrack influences, it’s rich with drum breaks, energy and evolving compositions. A record that forever keeps you guessing, powered by an exemplary orchestra at the top of their game.
Cuban composer and singer Raúl Gómez is most known for featuring in the groups Mirtha Y Raul and Los Bucaneros alongside producing the Cuban classic Los Reyes 73 album, amongst a whole host of other incredible productions over the years. Released on Cuba’s state-owned label Areito, Instrumental sees Gómez not only as an instrumentalist and author, but also as a producer and arranger.
It’s an album that deftly evades pigeonholing. Floating between instrumental mood music and library/soundtrack mastery, followed by explosions of cosmic-Latin funk, psych guitar workouts and compositions that reflect the orchestrated disco coming out of the US at the time, from greats such as Love Unlimited or MFSB. Lace that together with a healthy serving of Afro-Cuban magic to underpin the tracks and it’s a recipe for a record that captivates from start to finish.
1964 was one of the most momentous years in the musical life of Wayne Shorter. Early in the year the saxophonist was still a member of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, appearing on classic Blue Note albums like Free for All and Indestructible. Shorter made his own auspicious label debut that spring with Night Dreamer and quickly recorded the impressive follow-up JuJu. That summer he joined the Miles Davis Quintet, cementing a line-up that would become one of the seminal bands in jazz history. And when Shorter entered Van Gelder Studio with Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Elvin Jones on Christmas Eve 1964 they created a masterpiece with Speak No Evil, a transcendent set of six Shorter originals including the swinging title track, “Witch Hunt,” and sublime ballad “Infant Eyes.”

Desertshore, Nico’s third studio album, is a stark and mesmerizing piece of art that channels both personal anguish and ethereal beauty. Co-produced by John Cale, it strips music to its emotional core—led by Nico’s chilling vocals and harmonium, which dominate the record with a hypnotic intensity. The minimal arrangements create a haunting landscape, where each track feels like a glimpse into a private and poetic world. Though bleak in tone, the album captivates with its sincerity and atmospheric depth, making it one of Nico’s most enduring and critically admired works.
What sets Desertshore apart is its profound sense of space and raw vulnerability. Nico’s songwriting takes on an almost sacred tone, each piece unfolding slowly and deliberately, as if dictated by ancient ritual. The melodies, while sparse, linger long after the music stops. The album rewards repeated listening, revealing layers of emotion and subtle harmonic nuance that feel ahead of their time. Desertshore is not just a mood piece—it’s a singular artistic statement that has influenced generations of musicians.

Available from Blank Forms for the first time since its original 1980 release on ALM-Uranoia, New Sense of Hearing documents a collaboration between Takehisa Kosugi and Akio Suzuki, two luminaries of Japanese experimental music. Blank Forms’s high-quality reissue of the sought-after, long out of print LP, is produced by musician-artist Aki Onda and mastered from the original tapes recorded on April 2, 1979, at Tokyo’s Aeolian Hall.
Described by Suzuki as the “culmination” of their sound, New Sense of Hearing features the two musicians improvising together in that empty Tokyo theater, Kosugi on vocals, violin, and radio transmitter and Suzuki on the Analapos, his namesake glass harmonica, spring cong, and kikkokikiriki, all apparatuses of his own invention.

Rounding up our CD Store Day feature albums we have this limited ed. CD release from Monica Brooks (Dharug/ Gundungurra) & Laura Altman (Gadigal/ Wangal).
‘as is’ is the debut release by this long standing duo from Sydney’s experimental underground. The pair first started making music together in 2008 and have since gone on to form a uniquely complex yet unified sound, often being described as a single entity.
This recording was made inside a concrete room in an old brewery/department store turned artists studio surrounded by multiple construction sites in the centre of Sydney.
“Altman’s clarinet and Brook’s accordion fused, not with lines, but with pools of sound, coexisting in an ecology that had no clear beginning or end - a calmly focused, infinite field.” – Jim Denley

Glookies Guit is the fifth album by D.C Cross.
Again predominantly his Australian take on solo Acoustic guitar, Primitive guitar, Guitar Soli, Ecstatic Guitar - what-ever you would like to call it this week. Glookies Guit is sadder, weirder, more melodic than his other records, incorporating influences from Germany, South Africa, America and the U.K but forging ahead to find a truly Australian sound.
7 Guitar tracks and 3 ambient tracks made from guitar and field recordings from Germany, Netherlands, France and his home, Australia. “i have been playing the guitar alot and the album fell into place quite naturally”. Mastered by Mikey Young, this is the sound of a guitarist in love with playing the guitar, evoking nostalgia and emotion but never cheese. Music and art cloaked and captured by Cross in the beginning of 2024.
“Cross is emerging as an important voice among the modern players who continue to find new territory in the world of guitar discovered by John Fahey (who, of course, also experimented with found sounds and electronics). With the release of two fine albums in so short a time, he seems to be on a creative tear. Fans of Bachman, Isasa, Jones, Rolin, et al., take note.”
