The SCHOEPS M221B 1955 - 1985  mic with the M934B capsule... and the legendary Telefunken AC701 valve.
A brief history regarding this remarkable mic.
This is the renowned version that was behind the demanding international orchestral recording industry for decades. It was designed around the Telefunken AC701 valve (the only valve ever designed specifically for use in microphones... now rare as the proverbial hen’s teeth, and fetching insane dollars ... )
I bought my M221B’s about 20 years ago from the NZBC. Over time my mics began to develop a noise floor that became unacceptable.
After many trials at RSS with Dom Corso recording the mics, a lot of interchanging various components between both mics, testing and comparing voltages, etc, it came down to a singular problem... both the AC701 tubes were noisy !
Over the years I had bought new AC701’s usually from the English tube supplier, Chelmer as I also have a KM56  and an M249b. 15-20 years ago the AC701 was only about $50... and I still had 2 new, and 4 other used AC701’s in the workshop.
Enter Terry Demol, a dedicated Sydney based audio tech with a big heart for a big challenge....
The mission, should he accept it, meant ‘audio’ testing all 6 of my AC701’s, new and old. Not the same as testing with a valve tester.. as mic tubes need to be tested not just for gain, distortion etc, but for NOISE ! And then removing the existing noisy tubes from both mics, and replacing them with quiet tubes. Sound easy ? Think again...
The AC701 doesn’t have pins, it has floating wires that are soldered into the mic, that in some instances in an M221B, thread through very confined spaces.
Seriously, not for the faint hearted !
Terry set up a rig to test all my AC701 tubes and found that not only were the 2 new tubes very quiet, but so were all 4 of my used AC701s !
After several weeks of anticipation, came the day to test the mics with their new AC701s....
With Terry on hand, Dom set up fresh trials to determine the outcome. Voila both mics are now completely restored, with deep sonic integrity AND a very low noise floor. I am rapt to have this very special mics back in operations
Big thanks to all concerned!!

Recently RSS had the pleasure of hosting a tracking session for Katherine Outback Experience horseman and country artist, .
A star studded session with Gordon Rytmeister on drums, James Gillard on bass, .mccormack on acoustic instruments, and Benjy Pocock down from Queensland in the electric guitar chair.
The engineering was overseen by Rod, and took the seat while tracks were running.
Tom will be back soon to complete his vocals, along with Benjy (who took these pics-  thanks Benjy !) returning for more el/gtr action. Then James for some backing vocal sessions. And onwards !
The project is being produced by studio owner, Garth Porter.
