Today marks 20 years since the world lost Steve Irwin. 🐊 His passion for wildlife inspired generations of herpetology enthusiasts and put reptiles and amphibians into conversations in popular culture.

The origin of the word “herptile” is “crawling thing” and naturalists throughout history have described them as “terrible” and “disgusting” creatures, a rhetoric that was adopted by most modern societies. Steve fought that head on. He used sheer enthusiasm and sensationalism as a tool to change attitudes towards reptiles and amphibians. Steve’s pioneering approach is not to be replicated but to be absorbed, learnt from and passed on to future generations.

The Saltwater Crocodile had been hunted to near extinction in Australia throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Conservation efforts helped change this and with new legislation restricting the hunting of crocodiles, the Saltwater Crocodile became “Least Concern” again by 1996, the same year that The Crocodile Hunter was first broadcast.

Connecting people with nature on the TV screen is only part of the story and Steve, his family and the incredible teams he worked with are the ambassadors for change that we can all contribute towards.

It takes someone very special to drive such monumental environmental action. His legacy will continue to nurture positive attitudes towards reptiles for many years.
