Brewarrina Shire Council is backing the work of Moorambilla Voices and the opportunities it provides local young people, with a $2500 contribution to help Brewarrina participants take part in a Sydney creative residency culminating in a performance at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday 3 October.

Louth and Tilpa residents will have the chance to have their say on proposed changes to their weir structures with new meetings confirmed by the NSW government.

Meetings planned for Tuesday 25 August were cancelled due to road closures, but the new meetings for the “Fish Passage: Reconnecting the Northern Basin” project have been re-scheduled for Tuesday 15 September.

More than 400 anglers took to the Barwon River for the 2026 Colly Cod Classic and Carp Muster, with the popular Collarenebri event also removing almost 400 carp from the waterway.

Hosted by the Collarenebri Water Sports and Fishing Club from August 21 to 23, this year’s competition attracted 411 registrations, including 299 seniors and 112 juniors.

A major milestone has been reached for residents and travellers in the back country, with the final section of the Bourke to Wanaaring Road now sealed.

Bourke Shire Council completed the final seal at around 12.10pm today, marking the end of corrugations along the roughly 200-kilometre route between Bourke and Wanaaring.

The completion of the work means motorists can now travel the entire distance between the two communities on a sealed road — a significant improvement for locals, freight operators, visitors and emergency services using the route.

Former Bourke Mayor Andrew Lewis was given the honour of becoming the first person to drive the completed sealed route following the final works.

The project represents a major upgrade to one of the region’s important western road connections and is expected to make travel safer, more reliable and more comfortable for people travelling between Bourke, Wanaaring and surrounding properties.

For people who have spent years tackling the road’s notorious corrugations, the completion will be particularly welcome.

Congratulations to Bourke Shire Council and everyone involved in bringing the project to completion.

A portrait of one of Brewarrina’s most celebrated sons is in the running for a national People’s Choice Award, with the photographer behind the image calling on people to “rally for Merv”.

Pioneering Aboriginal press photographer Mervyn Bishop, born in Brewarrina in 1945, is the subject of Kamilaroi/Gomeroi photographer and filmmaker Dean Saffron’s finalist portrait in the 2026 National Photographic Portrait Prize.
