Rock Stompin' Funk & Blues Show

Rock Stompin' Funk & Blues Show The show is hosted by three Rock and Blues enthusiasts alternating each fortnight with brothers Adrian and Simon one week and Harry Q Holden the next.

This page is the online interaction between the 3WBC 94.1 FM show and its listeners. Much of our audience stream the show live from outside the station's broadcast range. We try to bring a range of new and old blues and rock to play each week. Of course, there are a few favorites like Lou Reed, Neil Young, Tab Benoit, and Frank Zappa liberally spread through nearly every show, but we always find i

nteresting tracks to play. If we played what the listeners had already heard then why play it in the first place? We enjoy hunting for different music and hope you enjoy what we find. We also appreciate your feedback, so bring it on, and remember "Rock Is".

Ive had a bit on in the past few days and my calendar is really full until about 5pm Thursday night.
I started putting this show together last Monday and finalised it last Tuesday. Sooooo Bro Simon getting out of the blocks early might just be a new family trait.

Simon might start the show solo but I’ll be in the studio in plenty of time for this little selection:

Confess It Saun & Starr Featuring The Dap-Kings
Long Way Down Ray Beadle
Wolves Chris Wilson
How Many More Years T-Model Ford
Back Yard GravelRoad
Sightwater Somali Yacht Club
Don't Mistake Kindness For Weakness Albert Collins
Young Boy's Blues Bernard Allison
My Time After Awhile Debbie Davies

I’ve thrown in all faves this week, its a pretty rock tinged show with GravelRoad and Somali Yacht Club but heaps of Blues with every other track

See you Thursday, 6pm on 3WBC 94.1fm or www.3wbc.org.au

I was at one of the CHEERSQUAD Records tribute shows for Chris Wilson last week and had the good fortune to hear Shannon Bourne play and sing “When I Was A Cowboy” the Leadbelly original. Shannon and Chris had played this together for many years and it was fantastic to hear Shannon honour the song and Chris. He held the audience in the palm of his hand.
I am going to play “Cowboy” as the first song in hour two and follow it up with Shane O’Mara and Rebecca Barnard performing “In The Mood” from the Yikesville CD put together during Covid.

Everything else fits into what could be a list of faves, as you’ll see some regular names. Of course I’ve tried to select tracks or versions that you might not have heard before. There’s a few extras in there so I might do a little juggle while Im at the desk. Listen in to see what gets a run

When I Was A Cowboy Chris Wilson
I'm in the Mood Rebecca Barnard
Bottom Feeder Jason Elmore & Hoodoo Witch
Midnight Creeper Elvin Bishop
Mississippi Night (Instrumental) Kingfish
Life After You Bondi Ci**rs
Bluff City Blues Collard Greens & Gravy

This week’s show is based around the days of the week and months of the year. “Days” wasn’t a total challenge, there are a few Tuesday and Wednesday songs but they didn’t really do it for me. So we thought we could thro in Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow and Someday for good measure.

Now there are some months, no-one writes songs about. Think about February, is there a song that springs to mind? And I only just made it with August - it was looking tight until I found two Khruangbin songs to choose from.

So here is hour two of tomorrow nights show:

Black Friday Steely Dan
Tomorrow Wall Of Voodoo
Last September Samantha Fish
Drive In Saturday David Bowie
Yesterday's Numbers The Flamin' Groovies
Friday On My Mind Peter Frampton
Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting Kenny Wayne Shepherd
A Sunday Kind Of Love Etta James
Friday Night Groove (Sunbury Festival, January 1973) Carson
Saturday Night Skyhooks
Someday (August 29, 1968) Chicago
August Twelve Khruangbin

Hey folks, Harry is busy on other matters so he asked for a fill in and I said I was happy to do a solo show. Secretly, I have been working on a theme I first ran when I did a few graveyards at 3RRR. Back then the show was “Under The Covers”, but seeing as this show is an early evening slot, I thought that name won’t work so the theme is “Who Did It Best?”. The premise is the same. An original recording followed by a cover version of the same song. Some are way better than the original some maybe not. I reckon the line ball call is “I Want To Ta-Ta You Baby”, written and performed by Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson, then covered by Etta James. Even tho’ the titles are all running twice, every version brings its own personality and I hope you can stay for the full show and answer the question, “ Who Did It Best?”

Purple Haze:
Jimi Hendrix
Frank Zappa
Sway:
The Rolling Stones
Lucinda Williams
Rock Bottom:
Elvin Bishop
Tommy Castro & The Painkillers
II Want To Ta-Ta You Baby
Johnny "Guitar" Watson
Etta James
Dancing Queen:
ABBA
$olal
Rocket Man:
Elton John
Mike Zito
Meet Me In The City:
Junior Kimbrough & The Soul Blues Boys
North Mississippi Allstars
I Believe To My Soul:
Ray Charles
Jane Lee Ho**er
Howlin' For My Baby:
Howlin' Wolf
George Thorogood & The Destroyers
Ooh Las Vegas:
Gram Parsons
Cowboy Junkies
Mr. Soul:
Buffalo Springfield
Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Honest I Do:
Jimmy Reed
Ross Hannaford Trio
Make It With You:
David Gates & Bread
Robert Finley
The Hunter:
Albert King

Hi there folks
I put my set list together on Sunday morning but sat on it tweaking a little here and a little there until I landed on what you see below.
But before I got my act together to write this blurb, Bro Simon beat me to it and this week it’s his turn to list an artist I planned to include, namely Chris Whitley. So while the late CW is worthy of being included in both hour one and two, I’ll swap this track for something equally listenable- I promise.

Son Of Orange County (Live June 21, 1974) &
More Trouble Every Day (Live June 21, 1974) Frank Zappa
Walkin' In The Shadow Of The Blues Little Charlie & The Nightcats
Clear Blue Sky Chris Whitley
Too Many Dirty Dishes Albert Collins
Make It With You Robert Finley
Unlovable Toronzo Cannon
One More Mile To Go Mike Bloomfield With Nick Gravenites And Friends

This will be a good show folks from 6-8 pm this Thursday
WWW.3wbc.org to stream it
Or 94.1 on the fm dial to tune the old way

She was right - Tom 'the suit' Forst
Beat the devil - Tinsley Ellis

One thing everyone has in common is they have questions, “Is this for me?”, “Are they telling the truth?, “When will they leave?”, “Does my bum look big in this?”

Well the Rock Stompin’ Show has our fair share too, and this week thanks to Bro Simon we are going to include many questions and sadly we do not profess to have any answers. But it all makes a fine theme-QUESTIONS!

I’m almost certain that everyone has asked at least one of these questions, maybe not in the same context but you might have at least got a response.

Say What? MonkeyJunk
Whatever Happened To The Revolution? Skyhooks
Are Friends Electric? Chris Whitley & The Bastard Club
Ask Me No Questions Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan
How Do You Feel? Honey Island Swamp Band
Are You Serious? Corey Dennison Band
Are You Losing Your Mind? Buddy Guy
RU4 Real? Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King
What Is Hip? Tower Of Power
Can You Do Without? The Meters
What Have You Done For Me Lately? Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Its been a little topsy turvy for me in the last month or so as far as being in studio. A little travel and a few other pressing issues have prevented me from putting shows together, but that’s all behind me and now I have a ripping little selection to play this week in hour two.

A new name from the Alligator Records stable, billed as one of the people to look out for in the future is DK Harrell.

An awesome version of Station to Station from Bowie and quite a few tracks from artists that we have played before but always deserve to get a fresh run.

Get a load of this list and tell me you can’t find something to like:

Talkin Heavy DK Harrell
Station To Station David Bowie
Bad Blood Marty Grebb
Cut That Chain Jeremiah Johnson Band
Down In The Dirt Amanda Fish Band
You're Nothing Bennet Matteo Band
Well Ran Dry James House
Changing Rules Otis Taylor
Hot Rod Heart John Fogerty

Sorry no Frank this week but he did say that Music Is the BEST. And I reckon he was right

Those of you who are regular listeners will know both Ade and I are big fans of Samantha Fish, proudly owning most, if not all, her recordings, and seeing her twice play live here in Melbourne. So it gives me great pleasure to have her latest cd in my possession, and it will be my feature album of the week on tomorrow night's show.
It'll just be me on the show as Ade has some celebrating to undertake, and it should be a grand show indeed!
Here's who I'll be playing...
Bob Mould
Gravelroad
Guitar Pete
Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Savoy Brown
Bennett Matteo Band
John Hiatt
Marcus King Band
Tom Hambridge
Jeremiah Johnson
Taj Mahal/Keb' Mo'
Linsey Alexander
Tommy Castro
Coco Montoya
and of course Samantha Fish from her album Paper Doll
