Fifty Years On
This week marks half a century since North Vietnamese troops marched into Saigon — a moment celebrated in Hanoi as a defining victory.
Recently, I had the rare privilege of photographing a dozen veterans, now living quietly in the northern capital. Their stories are etched in their faces — weathered, proud, and complex.
But while the government celebrates triumph, the legacy of war lingers in silence. Victims of Agent Orange live largely forgotten, tucked away in so-called "retirement villages," casualties not of battle but of aftermath.

Recently in Hanoi I had the privilege to photograph a group of war veterans living in a “retirement home”, surviving a war in which over 3 million lives were lost. Today marks the 50 year anniversary of the North Vietnamese troops first marching through Saigon.

This week marks the 50-year anniversary of the fall of Saigon, a symbolic loss for USA in the Cold War.
During the American War the US dropped 80 million litres of Agent Orange on the Vietnamese people whose suffering is reborn with every new generation.
The US has never recognised or compensated any of the three million victims.
Over half a century later the Vietnamese government still celebrates the proud “victory” whilst Agent Orange victims live forgotten in “retirement villages”.
