Making vs making money
I saw wrote a Substack about this — that’s all I needed to sign up for a read. Capturing so many of my own thoughts about making and making money. Lots of good reads on her Substack.
Tinkering here in the background, sometimes at the bench, mostly at the computer. The ebb and flow of business — the constant thinking, worrying, planning. The balance of creativity and fulfillment vs our bank balance. The pull of the garden, a big wonderful exciting project that seems to fill our hearts far more than benchtime lately — something we never imagined not loving. A change in seasons I guess.
Some days it feels impossible to see how we’ve made it all work for nearly 20 years and the doubt that it will continue for another 20 feels almost too strong. Other days we have the spark, the drive and the energy to keep pushing, looking, exploring. The little twinkle of curiosity in our toddler fills our hearts and brings into focus the little tiny wonders in every corner of the day. Small creative business life with your partner is a wild ride. Parenting is a wild ride. Not sure we’d recommend the combo (with the benefit of hindsight). But here we are, it’s all we really know — we’re both life long makers, stubbornly trying to make work, work. We don’t know any other way, so we keep on going. Trying to hang on to the bouncy confidence I had when doubters questioned moving and setting up a new workshop 7 years ago… I simply said “oh well, we’re creative enough to figure it out”.
Still figuring it out.
Still dreaming of making spoons.
Now also dreaming of gardening.
Makers always making.
