A red carpet at the door. No televisions on the walls. No pokies, TAB or football competing for attention.

Instead, people talk. Strangers become friends. Couples return to the table where they had their first date. And customers who first walked through the doors 18 months ago are now part of the family.

At The Old George and Dragon (“The OG”) in East Maitland, the magic isn’t simply found in the cocktails, live music, heritage surrounds or events.

It’s found in its people.

At the heart of The OG are owner Jason Purcell and his son Nicholas — a father-and-son dynamic duo whose warmth, humour and genuine care have become as much a part of the venue as the building itself.

Their philosophy?

It costs nothing to be nice.

And perhaps that explains why, after almost 190 years as The Old George and Dragon, a whole new generation has affectionately made it their own.

Meet Jason (and Nic) and discover the beautiful human story behind one of East Maitland’s most loved venues in our latest feature.

What makes a beautiful place to stay truly memorable?

For travel writer Sheriden Rhodes, it’s rarely just the interiors. It’s the music playing when you arrive. The local w**e waiting for you. Being asked which milk you drink. Knowing your hosts genuinely want you to have a wonderful time.

That philosophy sits at the heart of The River Haus Morpeth — the character-filled cottage Sheriden and husband Tom transformed from a tired 1950s home into a warm, stylish escape inspired by their favourite stays and Morpeth’s rich river-port history.

We caught up with Sheriden to talk about the year-long renovation, seven months of vintage treasure hunting, being the “dreamer” to Tom’s “realist”, and the unexpected role The River Haus has played in elopements, engagements and dog-friendly getaways.

Come inside The River Haus in our latest interview.
