The Italian champion Alberto Bettiol about Tadej Pogačar:

“I hope Pogačar attacks early on Saturday, after UAE hurt everyone on the San Martino in Grania sector with 100km to race. He can clear off, do his thing, and things fall into place.”

“That’s safer for him, he can avoid any crashes and pace his effort. If he gains a minute, he can have the team car with him in case he punctures. For the rest of us it’ll then be fast and furious behind as we race for second place. I like our chances for a place on the podium alongside Pogačar.”

“That’s still a result anyone and everyone should be proud of. Being beaten by Pogačar is not a dishonour, it’s a ‘success’ to remember and cherish when we are old and retired and talk to our kids about our career and we understand just how good Pogačar was during his career.”

“We have to be realistic, there’s nothing we can do. Pogačar can race without calculating his effort. Van der Poel can too, but us humans have got to think carefully about every effort we make in a race.”

New TT position for ?

Tom Danielson’s comments on Pogačar after the UAE TT Stage:

“1. It appears that Pogacar has a new TT position substantially reducing his frontal cda. While his bike looks similar, his position is different allowing him to close the hole between his hands and head easier this year. He might be on a smaller frame or even has new geometry to position him lower and even more forward in the front while being inside the UCI rules. I include some screen shots at the bottom of this post to show what I am referencing.

2. I think Pogacar struggled with stability both with the new position and possibly the bigger front wheel. You can see this with him moving around in the road instead of holding a solid straight line. This for sure hurt his ability to push the high power needed and take the shortest lines on the road which on a simple TT like this, make quite a time difference.

3. It seems like Pogacar is a little “off” here riding a slower cadence today in the TT and likely producing less power than he is capable of in a 12 min effort. In my option, and by looking at how fit he looks, I think this is due to training through the UAE Tour. This means he likely took on a large amount of training focused later in the season close to the start of this race. So with the travel and time change, his body could be a little run down and less sharp. However, I think the stages of the UAE tour are much easier than his training so look for him to recover and get sharper each day.“

“My goal is still to be an attacking rider” - Julian Alaphilippe 🇫🇷

“The main difference between now and ten years ago is that there is less room for instinctive riders like me. It’s increasingly about the calculations that our trainers make. It makes me sad when riders are only concerned with the power they rode after a race. If they’ve broken their 5-minute record, they don’t even care what happened in the race. That’s not cycling to me. For me it’s about the show, making the race and getting results.

My goal is still to be an attacking rider, to keep entertaining people, it’s the reason why I love this sport. I’m working hard to get back to my best level possible, but I’m living the sport the same way I did when I turned pro in 2014. A lot has changed, but I think it’s important to stay who I am. And yes, that’s becoming increasingly difficult in modern cycling. I try to evolve with the new reality, but I also want to stay myself.

Of course, aggressive racing with heart can still beat the raw numbers. If that were no longer the case, I would no longer be here. The sport will need that ‘panache’. The riders who color a little outside the lines of the usual scenario. I will continue to do that until I stop. To be honest, I rarely look at my abilities, because you can ride record after record, but in the end it’s all about your feeling on the bike. It’s one of the reasons why I chose Tudor Pro Cycling. Here there is a professional structure, but I also get the freedom to race the way I want.” - Julian Alaphilippe 🇫🇷 (), Wieler R***e
