🚨 #57 No More Cowboys: Training the Gripset Way

Welcome to Tiling Connect Talks — the podcast dedicated to raising the standards of Australia’s tiling and construction industry.

In this episode, we explore one of the most crucial yet often neglected aspects of building: waterproofing! I’m joined by Yandi Milans from Gripset Industries and RLA Polymers, as well as Stephen Grech from LRV8ED

We explore why proper waterproofing training is not just about ticking boxes — it’s about protecting reputations, properties, and people. We unpack the value and real-world impact of the Gripset GAPP training program — a game-changing initiative designed to upskill tradies, ensure compliance, and lift industry standards from the ground up.

Whether you're a seasoned contractor, an apprentice, or a business owner looking to future-proof your workforce, this episode will leave you thinking differently about the role of waterproofing in every successful build.

Tune in and find out how knowledge, training, and the right systems can change the game — one sealed surface at a time.

So buckle up, grab a coffee (or something stronger), and let’s get started!

Why “Busy” is a Toxic Word in the Workplace

We’ve all heard it before:
“How are you?”
“Oh, flat out. Just so busy.”

In our industry, being busy is almost expected.
Phone calls, site visits, supplier issues, deliveries, quoting, chasing, reacting…

At some point, being busy became a badge of honour!

But here’s the truth:
Being busy doesn’t mean being effective.

It doesn’t mean you’re growing, progressing, or adding value.

It often just means… overwhelmed, unfocused, or stretched too thin.

In high-performing teams and sustainable work cultures, clarity, prioritisation, and impact are far more important than merely completing endless to-do lists or meeting trivial numbers for reporting purposes.

Here’s why “busy” is toxic:

âś… It glorifies burnout
âś… It discourages asking for help
âś… It hides a lack of direction
âś… It creates reactive, not proactive, habits
✅ It erodes team connection (“I’d love to chat, but I’m just too busy”)

Instead of asking, “How are you?” — ask:
“What are you focusing on right now?”
“What’s been most impactful this week?”
“Where can I support you?”

Let’s stop celebrating being busy.

Let’s start celebrating productive, intentional, meaningful work.

Let’s build cultures where time is used with intention, not just filled.

The Truth About Sales in the Construction Industry (That Most People Get Dead Wrong)

Let me say this loud and clear!

Sales in construction aren't about slick talk, flashy brochures, or winning with discounts.
It's about trust, reputation, and delivering real value without the BS.

Too many people try to sell to tradies like they're pushovers.
But here's the truth: If you don't show up consistently, understand their world, and actually solve a problem, they'll see right through you.

I've spent years in the trenches, working with builders, tilers, and contractors—some of the best in the business.
And the ones who keep coming back? They're the ones who know I've got their back, long after the invoice is paid.

âś… Know the product inside out.
âś… Respect the job site.
✅ Be honest—even when it costs you.
âś… Always follow up.
✅ And most of all—shut up and listen.

That's how you win in construction sales. Not just this month. But for years to come.

If you're in the game and want to sharpen your edge—or if you're sick of dealing with salespeople who just don't get it—let's talk.

Agree? Disagree? Drop your thoughts in the comments.

Leadership isn't a title - it's a standard you hold yourself to!

Working from home doesn’t mean working less.
It means discipline without supervision.
Clarity without constant direction.
And drive without someone looking over your shoulder.

High performers don’t count hours — they count impact.

7 days a week? It’s not a punishment.
It’s the price some are willing to pay for a life most will never have.

There’s no clock-off when you’re building something that matters.
No “quiet quitting” when you’ve got goals that make you leap out of bed in the morning.
No waiting for motivation when you’re driven by vision.

This is leadership:
> Showing up when no one’s watching
> Doing more than what’s required
> Holding the line when others fold
> Being relentless in pursuit of better

If you’re working from home, grinding 7 days a week, chasing something meaningful, you’re not alone.

You’re not crazy. You’re just wired for more.

Keep going.

The world needs more leaders who don’t need to be told — they get it done.

So I've decided to sleep under a cardboard box.

This winter I'm spending one of the longest, coldest nights on the streets to help raise money for people experiencing homelessness. Homelessness can affect anyone - women, men, and children. It has devastating consequences for individuals and families. But you can help!

Support me during the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, and your donation will help the St Vincent de Paul Society empower more people to get off the streets and into stable accommodation. Vinnies provides counselling, education, health, and employment services to help people lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty. Vinnies CEO Sleepout

Every donation is meaningful.

Just $100 can provide a whole family with a warm, nutritious meal this winter. Together, we can combat homelessness in our community. Please help me raise funds today! Your generosity will be felt well beyond June 19th.

Thank you for being so supportive - it is truly appreciated.
