Do you agree that Jim Charlmers & Angus Taylor's life experiences make it more difficult for Them to Understand the housing struggles that many Australians face ?
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has defended remarks he made regarding Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, stating that while he has nothing against affluent Australians, he feels Taylor is unaware of the housing issues that many people face.
The discussion comes after Chalmers claimed in a lecture on Thursday that Taylor was born "at the top of the ladder."
Sarah Ferguson, the anchor of ABC's 7.30 show, questioned Chalmers on if he had "a problem with wealthy Australians."
"Not at all," Chalmers answered.
"I want more people to be successful in our society and economy."
Chalmers claimed that rather than focusing on individual wealth, his criticism was related to housing affordability and economic opportunity.
When Angus Taylor talks about a ladder, he says, "If the first few rungs are missing, there's not much point in having a ladder."
"It's great that Angus Taylor was born at the top of the ladder, but I believe that means he doesn't realize that many people are struggling."
Chalmers underlined that his argument was about different life experiences when asked if inheriting riches should be criticized, especially considering that notable affluent individuals had also existed within Labor ranks.
"The point I'm making about Angus Taylor is that not everyone is born at the top of the ladder." "Not everyone has had the same experiences that Angus Taylor has had."
According to Chalmers, it is the government's duty to enhance economic prospects and assist Australians who are struggling with home affordability and rising living expenses.
"We enthusiastically embrace our responsibility to make it easier for more people to do well," he stated.
He cited initiatives that help Australians, especially younger ones, enter the property market, such as tax breaks, cost-of-living assistance, and better earnings.
