I have watched the devastation in Gaza and the rise of pro-Palestinian protests across Australia and the world with concern. Most recently disrupting the Tour of Spain; The Vuelta. Since October 2023, over 64,000 civilians, including more than 19,000 children, have been killed in Israeli attacks. Famine has now been declared in Gaza City. These are not just numbers—they are lives lost to a conflict driven by ideological and religious extremism.
This is not a defence of either the Israeli or Palestinian governments. It is a condemnation of the rigid beliefs that continue to justify the killing of innocents. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is steeped in history, but history must not be an excuse for perpetual violence.
Both governments must act. Israel must halt military offensives in civilian areas, lift the blockade, and stop forced displacement. Hamas and the Palestinian Authority must cease attacks on Israeli civilians, release hostages, and engage in genuine ceasefire negotiations.
While I understand the outrage, I personally cannot stand alongside flag bearers of a regime that has shown intolerance and disregard for life. Nor can I support a state that responds to terror with overwhelming force. Neutrality is not passivity—it is a moral stance against all forms of ideological violence.
The international community has condemned the catastrophe, but condemnation is not enough. We must demand that both sides embrace ideological and religious tolerance—not as a concession, but as a sign of progress.
If we are to call ourselves civilised, we must reject the idea that divine mandate or historical grievance justifies the killing of children. The time to speak up is now.
