📍Geographical Centre of Australia, Lamberts Centre, Northern Territory.

🗺️ How to Get to the Lambert Centre from the Stuart Highway
• 🚗 Start at Kulgera Roadhouse
• Located on the Stuart Highway, about 20 km north of the NT/SA border
• Fuel up here - it’s the last stop before heading off-road. Stay the night at the CP ($20) and unhitch the van.

• 🛤️ Turn east onto Finke Road
• From Kulgera, take the Finke Road heading east
• Drive approx. 124–126 km on this gravel road

• 🪧 Look for the Lambert Centre turnoff
• Small, unmarked 4WD track on the left
• GPS is recommended - it’s easy to miss

• 🛻 Follow the 4WD track
• About 11–14 km of rough, sandy track
• High-clearance 4WD is essential

• 📍 Arrive at the Lambert Centre
• Marked by a flagpole (replica of Parliament House) and a plaque
• No facilities apart from a drop toilet - bring all supplies.

So, here we were. The end of the Oodnadatta Track. And the big question: did it live up to the hype?

Absolutely. One hundred percent.

This isn’t just a drive, it’s a journey through Australian history. You’re not just looking at things from a distance; you’re right in the middle of it all. You’re driving through an ancient Indigenous trade route, through the story of the Overland Telegraph, and through the incredible, back-breaking effort that built the old Ghan railway.
It’ll test you and your vehicle with its corrugations and changing tracks, but the rewards are at every single stop. From the eerie quiet of the railway ruins to the pure joy of a warm soak at Coward Springs, it’s a trip of amazing contrasts. It’s tough, no doubt, but it’s also accessible. It makes you feel like you’ve actually seen the real heart of South Australia. The legend is definitely real.
