Sixteen people have been charged after a police operation targeting the distribution of synthetic based drugs at nightclubs in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley.

Police have seized more than half a million dollars in cash, around 5.6 kilograms of methylamphetamine, 2.8 kilograms of co***ne, 23 grams of ketamine and a large number of M**A capsules during a series of raids conducted across south-east Queensland.

Detectives executed a total of 10 search warrants and have charged the men, aged between 23 and 43, with a multitude of offences including six trafficking and 31 drug supply charges.

Officer In Charge of Fortitude Valley CIB Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Stephen Bull said, “It’s a timely reminder for those planning on celebrating New Year's events that we will continue our efforts to keep the community safe and target drug suppliers.”

Major highways and roads remain cut off by floodwater across Far North Queensland as intense rainfall enters its third day.

The Bruce Highway, from the Seymour River Bridge at Bemerside, between Ingham and Tully, is closed to all traffic due to the ongoing wet weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued several flood warnings for Townsville to north of Innisfail and parts of inland northwest Queensland, including for life-threatening flash floods.

A 51-year-old man has died in hospital overnight after he was severely burnt in a unit fire in Cairns on Monday.

Emergency services were called to Mahogany Street around 10:40am to reports of a significant unit fire.

The 51-year-old man suffered critical burns and was taken to Cairns Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire is non-suspicious and investigations are continuing.
