Last week, I had the honour of providing morning tea for the Groundwater Gathering, an event dedicated to all First Nations Services within Uniting Care Australia (Qld).

I’ve always aspired to work with charities, and nourish the community with my food. This is a meaningful first step into this field. Grateful is an understatement 🙏🏾 Esso (thank you) Uniting Care Australia for having me 🥰🫶🏾

Peniwinkles are small edible sea snails found all around the shallow coastal areas of Australia, usually in and around reef/rocky areas and particularly thickly amongst the mangroves. That’s where you’ll find the big, juicy ones! Best to gather them in low tide when their habitat is exposed, as they often hide in crevices/pockets in the rocks/mangroves. They tend to form in large groups, so if you find one, there are likely more nearby. Periwinkles are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart and brain health and are low-calorie source of protein.

Best way to cook these lublies: Rinse/wash in cold water. We usually take a bucket/bottles home from the sea/creek. Boil in saltwater (just enough to cover) for 5-10mins or until their yellow lids loosen up. Make sure to only eat the ones with a yellow markings around the lids! Extract the snail meat by using a toothpick or pin/needle by lifting the lid and pricking the meat and pulling it out. You can add any other herbs, sauces and flavour enhancers but we grew up eating them just like this! Savouring the ocean flavours 🤤
