I've had the wonderful opportunity to assist .peach in curating the prestigious 2025 Siliceous Award for Ceramic Excellence by - a celebration of Australia’s most talented ceramic artists.

Siliceous is a renowned exhibition that showcases the finest technical and conceptual ceramic art from across Australia. This year’s finalists have presented a diverse and inspiring collection of works, reflecting the incredible creativity and skill of Australian ceramic artists

👏 Huge congratulations to the winners and a massive thank you to the organisers for putting together such a successful event!

🖼️ The exhibition runs until 25th March, 2025 at Metcalfe Gallery, Brisbane Institute of Art. Open daily from 10am to 4pm — don’t miss it! Visitors are encouraged to cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Posting one of my own artworks for a change. 🐛

Unwilling Vessel, 2024
White Stoneware, porcelain, Jade glaze.

Unwilling Vessel explores the unsettling nature of parasites, focusing on the parasitic wasp that lays its eggs inside a living caterpillar. The larvae develop within the caterpillar and eventually chew their way out, forming silken cocoons on its surface, ultimately killing its host.

This process illustrates the interconnection of life and destruction.
My vase and caterpillar sculpture presents two hosts: the caterpillar, a direct representation of parasitism, and the vase, a man-made object enduring a similar invasion. The stark white cocoons disrupt both organic and artificial forms, re-framing the macabre occurrence as both an intrusion and an adornment.

The title Unwilling Vessel refers not only to the vase as a vessel but also to the larvae’s uninvited intrusion, transforming the unwilling host into a vessel.

A strong artistic identity is essential for being memorable and recognisable in your field. ✨

No one begins with a fully developed creative identity, and exploration is essential. However, working toward a cohesive narrative is what ultimately strengthens your artistic work.💪

A weak artistic identity often shows through inconsistency in style, lack of clarity in purpose, and imitating others without personal input. This leads to disconnection and confusion for the audience.

To build a strong narrative, artists need self-reflection and commitment to a coherent, authentic voice that resonates with their vision.

For this project, we went with all the bells and whistles. Branding, copywriting, photography and editing, custom website design and development with a shop and gallery as well as contact forms and newsletter integration. Not a small task but very happy with the outcome.

Art is a two-way conversation. As the artist creates, they examine themselves and the world as if under a microscope, drawing insights and reaching new conclusions along the way. At the end of this process, the viewer discovers their own interpretations and connections. It’s a process that reveals something personal for both sides.

It’s important to remember that artists are not machines producing work solely for the viewer's consumption; they are nurturing their own growth each time they embark on a creative journey.
