Zonta Clubs of Brisbane and surrounds will be painting the region orange in the lead-up to and during the 16 Days of Activism later this year, to highlight the impacts of domestic and family violence on women and children and our economy.🧡

Zonta Says NO co-ordinator, Jo Diessel, said: “The 16 Days of Activism is a significant campaign for Zontians worldwide. Come join us as we mark our 10 years of combined advocacy!”

“Activities include the placement of our ‘orange’ wooden silhouettes of women, children and pets in prominent locations around our area with information about our Clubs and our ‘Safety Cards’ with emergency contact numbers for people experiencing domestic violence,” she said.

The actions will occur from November 25, United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10, the United Nations Day for Human Rights.

On November 27, over 60 Zontians will walk around Brisbane City wearing orange ‘“Zonta Says NO” to Violence Against Women’ t-shirts to raise awareness.

Streets are the arteries of a city. They keep it alive — connecting people, goods, and ideas — while also shaping its culture and character. 🛣

In Brisbane, that character is defined by its hills and its river, which twists and loops through the city, creating peninsulas that have each developed their own distinct identity and character.

Transportation including cars and trucks has profoundly reshaped Brisbane’s character and has significantly affected the city’s amenity.

The old suburban arterials — Sandgate Road, Milton Road, Enoggera Road, Lutwyche Road — were never designed to carry today’s traffic volumes, let alone the endless procession of large vehicles.

Despite efforts to relieve pressure with tunnels, B-doubles still roar past timber-framed houses, their windows and doors shut tight against the noise. Sirens of ambulances and police echo day and night.🚨

Perhaps it’s time to rethink how we balance growth, movement, and liveability before we lose the qualities that make Brisbane unique.

Have you been meaning to spruce up your house, get some repairs done, or maybe even renovate? Look no further than our September feature, No Place Like Home.🏡

Interior designer and owner of Department of Home and Gifts in New Farm, Violetta Tosic, believes first impressions matter when staging your home for sale.

“Now, more than ever, conveying the high quality and liveability of your home by dressing it with furniture, art and styling items to project beauty and liveability, are important aspects to preparing your home for sale,” Violetta says.

To create that emotive personal experience, Violetta explains that there has been a shift away from the removal of all the homeowner’s personal items and replacement with hired furniture.

Motherhood columnist Annabelle Chapple has written a column inspired by father's day this September. 👨‍👦

"There’s something about having a little a boy that has made me look differently at the significant men in my life these past few years," she writes.

Our son at three and a half is mostly a rowdy toddler but the blink and you’ll miss them moments where he is sweet, sits in his emotions or is thoughtful, catch me.

"It’s at these times I see simultaneously the man he will grow to be and that at the core of all the grown men I love is still a child who just wants a bear hug and to be told they’re a good boy."

1 in 5 Australians will suffer a mental health challenge in any one year.

It makes sense for us all to be armed with common knowledge about mental health and how to offer help to someone who may be struggling with it - there are some commons warning signs that we can all look out for.

A most noticeable change is a change in mood or behaviour. This could be unexplained sadness or being irritable. It may involve sudden mood swings including excessive anger which is out of character for the person you are concerned for.

A major change is coming to aged care, and it could cost pensioners dearly.

On November 1, 2025, the new Support at Home program replaces the existing Home Care Packages program.

This new system forces everyone to co-contribute for things that previously were paid entirely from their home care package funding.

If you are looking for something new to do for your next date or family outing, consider a picnic in the park with live music provided by the Brisbane Symphonic Band (BSB). 🎺

Hannah Rowlands, band leader of BSB Swing, said: “BSB is our primary ensemble. It’s a concert band-style ensemble, and they play a range of things like classical pieces, marches and movie themes.

“BSB Swing is your classic big band, so just saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm section. And we tend to play more popular music, like jazz, Latin, funk, which are more on the contemporary end that people might recognise.”

Dr Burrell said the BSB will not only play a lot of original music from Brisbane musicians and classical music, but also new arrangements of popular music, such as Taylor Swift and Ozzy Osbourne hits.

The band’s upcoming concerts will be held at 7th Brigade Park on 5 October at 2pm, and at Kalinga Park on 19 October at 3pm.
