Local mother Silvia, in hope of enriching the social life of her three-year-old boy, is looking to match up local grandparents with her son in Newstead, as their family is far away in Europe.

“There perhaps is a couple or an individual who would like to have a young cheeky chappy in their life and teach him a bit of their own world,” Silvia said.

“My little one is a bright, bubbly, smart, bilingual toddler who loves cars and dinosaurs, collecting little treasures and building relationships with people around him. Absolutely loves learning new skills and doing crafts with adults."

She hopes they can slowly build rapport by meeting in the park at first and eventually organising visits.

With homeless and vulnerable people currently lining up to use 3rd Space’s daytime rest area, a welcome upgrade will be carried out to extend and improve the facilities thanks to the Patrons of New Farm.

3rd Space Board Chair Ian Kemish said the demand for the organisation’s day centre services is significant, with up to 170 people visiting the centre on their busiest day.

“We're a day centre; we provide a moment of an opportunity for a bit of dignity, a cup of coffee, washing clothes, access to the services that are required to get yourself rest,” he said.

Mr Kemish said due to government underfunding, they rely on volunteer and philanthropic support to stay afloat and gave his thanks to the patrons.

Merry Christmas from your local community!

We asked some community members to share their Christmas traditions and wishes.

The Reverend David Ruthven ✝
Rector at St Augustine's Hamilton Anglican Church

Christmas Message
In a world that can feel loud, rushed, and endlessly demanding, I’m struck each year by how quietly counter-cultural the Christmas story really is. For all the beauty of family gatherings and festive meals, the heart of Christmas lies somewhere far more humble.

It is the story of God doing extraordinary things through very ordinary people facing tough circumstances. It is God choosing not to arrive as a conquering hero, but as a fragile newborn, completely dependent on the love and care of his family. It is the story of a young couple searching for a safe place to stay, a challenge sadly familiar to many today.

It is angels bringing news of hope not to the powerful or privileged, but to shepherds working the night shift. It is a king misusing his authority, and foreigners noticing what others overlooked as they followed a distant star.

May this Christmas bring you moments of quiet hope and the assurance that you are seen, valued, and loved.

What is a Christmas tradition you love?
My Christmas tradition is simple: lights, lights, and more lights. I love soaking up the festive magic around New Farm and watching the kids light up with excitement as they wait for Santa. Those little moments—full of wonder and joy—mean everything to me.

What is a Christmas tradition you love?
A rare day off with the family, celebrating Christmas and enjoying home-cooked food from Mum and my mother-in-law.

What is your Christmas wish this year?
For all my friends and family to be healthy, safe and surrounded by love.

Seafood at Christmas is an iconic Australian tradition, and the team at New Farm Seafood will no doubt be working tirelessly to keep us in supply.

How good is it holding this magazine in your hand? 🗞

One of our city’s few surviving independent publications and aside from the local content, I’m certain it’s also the tangibility people love about this paper.

That you can prop it beside your coffee cup, browse articles and not have to tap a screen mid-read. It’s a moment of its own, no distractions.

(Look, we're posting this on social media, but go pick up the paper! It's free!)

Our motherhood columnist Annabelle Chapple is going analogue this Christmas.

"The internet on my phone has given me reason to be the world champion of multitasking. If I’m waiting in the school pick up line I can be ordering groceries, in the doctors waiting room I have no excuse not to respond to emails, at the playground with our kids on my days off it’s possible to take a work call."

"These digital distractions rob me of the gift of genuine presence with my family, a creeping and silent theft likely happening in your home too.

"So this Christmas and New Year I’m experimenting with how much analogue I can creep back in.

"I’m going to save my fit watch for exercise only, put the Kindle down and read paperbacks, turn to actual cookbooks over the internet for recipes, grab a newspaper instead of doomscrolling news websites and, the big one, remove email from my phone, relegating it back to the laptop where it belongs."

What kind of Christmas carol does Santa sing in the desert? “O Camel ye faithful.”
What is the best Christmas present to receive? A broken drum – you can’t beat it! Ba dum bum…🎅

Our columnist Beth Leach has a bad dose of pun-itis.

"Oh yeah. It’s that time of year again when we brace ourselves for the onslaught of Christmas cracker humour freely flowing like custard on a 35-degree day. Speaking of which, what do you call an academic paper written by a pudding? A dessertation."

"But seriously, folks, more important than getting a pun-net full of laughter is being playful and letting go without being self-conscious. Life can be demanding, so shake it off and release your inner child to play on words. Walk that thin line between predictable and corny. Delight in the ludicrous nature of life, and chuckle your way through December. That’s how eye roll. Mary Christmas to all."

John Hawkins, of Hawkins Nursery fame, has shared some summer tips for this year’s Christmas tree and keeping your lawn in top shape.🎄

Have you ever thought of buying your family a living Christmas tree? They have become popular in the last few years. You can have them cut fresh, but I’m talking about one that’s growing in a pot and you can keep for many years. Most nurseries are selling them potted, anywhere from 1m to 2.5m.

Probably the most important factor in lawn care, and one that is often overlooked, is fertiliser. It’s a magic ingredient that will turn nondescript grasses into a lush lawn.

Fertilising need not be hard work, in fact, nothing could be easier than using a hose click-on system with a bottle container, spreading the fertiliser for you. Spray it all over the grass. If there’s any fertiliser left, just use it on your garden, it will make a lot of difference.

Got your Christmas tipple sorted yet? 🥂

Oliver Summons from Grape and Grazing recommends A. Rodda ‘Baxendale’ Chardonnay as his wine of the month.

"On the nose you get white peach, citrus peel, and a sense of minerality that feels like licking a very expensive rock."

"I tried to approach this bottle like a critic… but immediately remembered why I’m writing this at all – it’s just so fantastic.

"Especially great value for something so therapeutic, like a deep breath you can drink. If you suspect Christmas might require a few of those, buy more than one bottle."

Two entrepreneurial young Teneriffians will once again hold a lemonade stand to raise money for the Brunswick Street Pantry. 🍋

Naya and Beckett’s Lemonade Stand will be set up for the third year to fundraise on Saturday, December 20 at The Cannery, 139 Commercial Road.

Lemonades will be just $2 each until sold out.

This month, Mike O’Connor muses on a council parking fine crackdown, a flight noise trial at Brisbane Airport, and the overdone concept of Olympic “legacy”.

He writes: "As the year draws to a close, I can announce that the winner of the Most Overused And Abused Word for 2025 is “legacy”.

"No politician or Very Important Person can mention the 2032 Olympics without invoking the wondrous legacy that will be delivered to us courtesy of this sportsfest.

"Given the current rate of progress the only legacy is likely to be a large hole in the ground and an impressive pile of media releases with a trimmed down Olympics limited to a foot race from the Story Bridge Hotel to the Breakfast Creek Hotel with the winner getting a stubby of ###X Gold and a free steak and salad."

As the new Aged Care changes came into force on November 1, there have been significant issues – as predicted.

The system has become more complicated to navigate, access, and use, and increasingly unaffordable. Combined waitlists for assessment and approved funding are over 200,000 people.

Older Australians are suffering significant anxiety and stress as they face higher costs for essential care and services, whether at home or in residential aged care. This is placing severe emotional pressure on our elders.

Christmas is here and for some, it can be a sad and isolating time, particularly for older people living alone.

It takes a village – please reach out to someone you know who may be feeling isolated and have a chat or share a cuppa.
