We had an incredible time attending Screen Forever at the beginning of May! It was a whirlwind of inspiring conversations, productive meetings, and exciting new connections. 🌟 Backing Aussie Stories: Five Storey Films Supports Streaming Quotas

In 1989, Australia introduced local content quotas for free-to-air TV — and it worked. It boosted local production, created jobs, and filled our screens with Aussie stories. It helped build a vibrant, world-class screen industry — and audiences loved it.

Now, with streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon in so many homes, we have the chance to do it again.

Right now, these platforms aren’t required to invest in local content — but with Australians spending $3.5 billion a year on streaming, we believe they should.

Strong, fair quotas for streamers could bring:
✨ More opportunities for Australian writers, directors, producers and crews
📈 Industry growth, job creation, and pathways for emerging talent
🌏 Local stories that travel the world — and resonate at home
👧 Kids growing up seeing themselves and their communities on screen

Let’s future-proof our screen industry. Let’s make sure Aussie stories are not just told — but celebrated.

Another fantastic night of comedy at the Kingston Butter Factory! Huge shoutout to Craig Quartermaine and the incredible team at the Kingston Butter Factory Cultural Precinct for curating yet another world-class show and bringing top-tier comedy to Logan City. This marks the third consecutive sell-out show, proving just how much audiences love these nights!

Amazing work by Senator Jacqui Lambie - raising this vital issue in the Senate. Where are the Labour and Liberal representatives echoing their support for the streaming quotas? Something that was promised to be implemented by June 2024, yet never materialised.

Silence is undermining the industry.

With the election looming, it's hard to know where to put that vote, especially when the two major parties are ignoring an issue that directly affects the entire screen industry. How does their silence engender voter support?

Five Storey Films attended the AIDC 2025 Marketplace in Naarm a few weeks ago. A fabulous event each year, great industry sessions and insights, and the ability to meet with a variety of decision makers from Australia and around the globe.

With the amazing support of Screen Queensland not only as a key supporter of AIDC, but also in their support of the screen industry in their Market and Travel grants for Queensland practitioners.

We stand with the First Nations community, today and always. The incomparable power of their storytelling over 65,000 years and counting has recorded the deep history of this vast continent, and its complex present. We are grateful to the First Nations filmmakers and producers whose work has enriched and inspired us.
Here’s a few of our favourites - in no particular order:

First Australians
Servant or Slave
Redfern Now
Total Control
The Australian Wars
Looky Looky Here Comes Cooky
Incarceration Nation
The Songkeepers
First Footprints
Ella
You Can Go Now
Her Name Is Nanny Nellie
Zach’s Ceremony
Faboriginal
Black As
Rabbit Proof Fence
Putuparri and the rainmakers
Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra
Lousy Little Sixpence
Bastardy
Utopia
Contact
Gurrumul

We recognise that not all of these projects were led by First Nations key creatives, but to our understanding were made with the permission of the communities and people whose stories are featured.

Greetings from Marrakesh, Morocco, where I (Mandy) was proud and privileged to represent Five Storey Films at this year’s World Congress of Science and Factual Producers, and take some of our incredible stories to the world!

A lot of the decision makers I met with were genuinely very excited to hear that Queensland has a new (but highly credentialled) kid on the (factual) block, and have already indicated strong interest in some of our projects, so please continue to watch this space for further developments!

Apart from the valuable meetings and sessions, some of the other highlights included the tour of the Jacaranda/Dune studios (seen here) – where Game of Thrones and the Gladiators were shot – and, with mountainous backdrops like those also seen in a couple of the pics here, even the 45-minute morning walk to the conference was most invigorating!

Here's to hoping some of the seeds planted here, bear delectable fruit in the next year!
