Another great Soul Sunday. Extreme Heat’s Bruce Spelman invited James Chappell III up to join on Delbert McClinton’s classic Standing on Shaky Ground. A big thanks to Paul Rios for capturing this!

11/2 Sunday at : Vulcan Gas Company: A Cultural Utility 🔗 for 🎟. Two showings: 4:30pm and 7:30pm with a Q&A in between.

One of the untold origin stories of the “Live Music Capital of the World”, the Vulcan Gas Company opened its doors on October 27, 1967 in Austin, Texas. While the West Coast was just coming down from the “Summer of Love”, a group of surprisingly resourceful counterculture members gathered around the University of Texas organized this scene powered by bands such as the 13th Floor Elevators, Shiva’s Headband, Conqueroo and Johnny Winter and a strong local trade in psychedelics.

Through the three brief years of its existence, the Vulcan would feature legendary Texas acts such as Lightin’ Hopkins, Steve Miller Band, Mance Lipscomb, Bubble Puppy, the Vaughn brothers and Feddy King as well as draw national acts such as the Fugs, Canned Heat and the Velvet Underground. This is the whole story of the club that would serve as the blueprint for later legendary venues such as Antone’s and the Armadillo World Headquarters told by the surviving founders and artists that made it happen.

Let’s free Doug! Doug Sahm was the greatest Texas musician you’ve never heard of, although you most likely heard his music before.

Sir Doug and the Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove premiered at SXSW in 2015, and was released on Amazon Prime in 2017. In 2021, the music license expired and we had to pull the film down. Doug’s story just disappeared.

As Doug might say, “it’s all about the groove”, and right now the world sure needs to hear those sweet sounds. Sign up to join the Groove Network at sirdougfilm.com and join our journey to re-release the film. 😎

If you’ve ever gone hiking or camping in bear country, you’ve probably seen signs that read “Don’t feed the bears”. But what happens when people do?

Come check out an award-winning short by A+L editor Jessie Auritt at the ShortCase on Monday, July 18 at 7pm! 🐻🎥
