✨Something magical is coming!✨

PERENTIE PRESS is developing a new list for fairytale and folktale adaptations and we’re calling it GRAPHIC FOLK.

We’re pleased to share that the first GRAPHIC FOLK title is written by none other than the doctor of fairytales, Kate Forsyth! Strawberries in the Snow is inspired by a traditional Czech folktale called The Twelve Months.

Dr Kate Forsyth says fairy tales employ a rich visual language, using archetypes, colour symbolism, and strong, dramatic motifs to convey deeper meanings and evoke powerful emotions. This makes them a perfect vehicle for graphic novels. Kate strongly believes that the timeless enchantment and wisdom of fairy tales combined with the vital energy and verve of graphic novels will appeal to a broad and diverse audience of modern readers.

Kate, we agree! We’re totally enchanted by your storytelling and look forward to introducing a whole new readership to the magic of folktales.

Strawberries in the Snow will be illustrated by Tamlyn Teow and release in late 2027.

There’s more!

For the first week of December 2026, we will be open to pitches from authors or author-illustrators who would like to write a graphic novel for this list. More information can be found at www.perentiepress.com/graphic-folk

📣 Exciting news!

The 2027 PERENTIE PRIZE is now open!

Last year saw an impressive number (and calibre) of submissions, and we signed FOUR stories which are currently coming to life. We love running this competition as it’s an excellent opportunity for writers who love the format but don’t feel they can draw (I will never use the phrase ‘can’t draw’—it’s the art teacher in me).

Have a story you think needs to be told visually? Check out the PERENTIE PRIZE, where we’re looking for compelling junior fiction, middle fiction, YA fiction or children’s non-fiction.

If you’re the lucky winner, you’ll receive an offer of publication, a $2000 advance against royalties, and you’ll be paired with an Australian illustration who’ll bring your words to life. How good is that??

You have until 30 November to get your entries in. Find more information here: perentiepress.com/perentie-prize
