10 Guitar Project: Volume 2 by David Reaston
This record represents a myriad of different worlds colliding for me - it's part archival of music from the 2010’s happening in Aus, it's part innovation with the way Dave's music is constructed/presented/executed and it's part shock and awe at the avalanche of guitars coming at you. David’s been a part of the MNM catalogue via his work with Ensemble Sooon and this album also hosts Jess Green in the mix - it's a pleasure to see the worlds expanding and a pleasure to welcome Dave to the fold as a bandleader! 10 Guitar Project: Volume 2 is the second instalment of music written for an ensemble featuring ten electric guitars. Recorded in 2015 across two shows at Sydney’s Venue 505, the album captures the guitarmageddon of guitarists Zane Banks, Julian Curwin, David de Vries, Jess Green, Peter Koopman, Luke Liang, Carl Morgan, David Reaston, Tim Rollinson, Sam Rollings, Jeremy Sawkins, and Oliver Thorpe, anchored by Jamie Cameron on drums and cymbals.

Additional overdubs, editing, and production by David Reaston in 2025.

CATHARSIS NOW! #6

Come along to Mirrorball Ministries , bring your instrument and join us in a new monthly series dedicated to improvised music and collective release. Each month, the Brisbane Conduction Orchestra is joined by two other acts - one of which becomes the Catharsis Now! Band (formed live on the night) where local musicians put their names into a hat, and four performers are drawn at random to create a one-off ensemble for the performance. No rehearsals, no discussion - just presence, listening, and (hopefully) some catharsis. Hayley Chan is a performer, improviser, and composer based in Warrane/Sydney. Praised for her ability to “evoke atmosphere through subtlety and nuance” (Jessica Nichols, Sydney Morning Herald), her work transcends traditional genre boundaries, drawing inspiration from leading Australian artists such as Maria Moles, Dylan van der Schyff, and Andrea Keller. With a background in jazz, hip-hop, improvised, experimental, and industrial music, Hayley brings a distinctive post-genre sound to her performances.

Coming in from the legend herself, Hayley Chan, is an EP of percussion reflections that sets you in time, place and space! Hayley is a wonderfully explorative player/composer and this record makes the first solo effort being released into the ether (woohoo!) - please enjoy!

Here’s what Haley has said about the record:
“I composed and recorded Desert Meditations in July of 2024. My aim was to create a cohesive set of works that captured my musical journey over the previous four years, shaped by my time studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under a number of improvisers including Simon Barker, Chloe Kim, Bree van Reyk, Matt Keegan, and Hilary Geddes. Throughout the EP, I expanded on ideas I first began to explore when composing my drumset concerto Creatures/Inhabitants (2024). I delved deeper into how the drum kit can depict internal processes—the mind, physiological experiences, and shifting emotional states—through composition, timbre, embodiment and movement.
On the surface, the pieces that make up Desert Meditations portray different experiences of someone crossing a desert: the oppressive heat, mirages on the horizon, the onset of dizziness and disorientation. But in hindsight, the EP also became a reflection of my own musical journey and state of mind at the time. I was navigating a kind of artistic drought, caught between momentum and stagnation, feeling as though my playing had begun to plateau. Composing these works became a way of pushing through that dryness, of distilling what I had learned, and ultimately, of finding a path forward"

Meredith Beardmore is a maverick; her music is deep and hits a spot unlike many others for me. It engages whilst being meditative, it's comforting, although a little spooky, and it's proudly human in a world of digital noise. Working with Meredith to get this music out has been a dream, and we’re so excited to be getting this into your ears - you’ll want to sit and be still with this record!

From Meredith about the album: “This album is a collection of musical landscapes from around the Tasman Peninsula. It features a combination of field recordings taken on site, historical flutes, piano and whistle; many of these elements have been collaged. The Tasman Peninsula is incredibly beautiful and stark. Many of the places I visited had a very distinct and immediate impression. Perhaps a combination of history, memory, and nature.”

It’s a 15-piece thrash against your jazz-bone; it’s a jab in the eye with a sopranino saxophone; a punch in the jaws with a 24” trash cymbal. Your ears will bleed with delight; your heart will marry a bass drum; you will enjoy the pain of eating a trumpet with your ears.

These 3 musicians are without a doubt some of my favourite in the whole world (they're so goddam good!!!) and this album comes together as a tour de force with the 3 of them rolling into each other's creative sensibilities alongside the choirs of Australian birds!
