SUNNYBOYS BOX SET RELEASE AND ONE-OFF AUSTRALIAN SHOW
45 years since the release of the classic eponymous debut album. Sunnyboys release via WARNER MUSIC a 4LP vinyl only version of that same release. The 4LP box set brings together the original album, the demos that pre-date it, the 1981 remix of their eponymous 1980 ep, interview segments and the jewel in the crown; a live performance recorded at Sydney venue the Governors Pleasure in February 1981.

And in celebration of the box set release Sunnyboys, featuring founding members Jeremy and Peter Oxley, Richard Burgman and drummer Paul Larsen sitting in for the recently retired Bil Bilson, will reunite this October for a very special one-off performance at Brisbane’s Roma St. Parklands. The band that inspired a hundred garage bands, hook ups, road trips and surf sessions will bring their timeless songs to the stage one last time.

Shonen Knife founder Naoko Yamano speaks with Paul Cashmere of Noise11 ahead of Shonen Knife’s 2026 Australian tour.

In this wide-ranging interview, Yamano reflects on the band’s extraordinary history, from their first Australian visit in 1997 to their continuing relationship with Australian audiences. She discusses Shonen Knife’s current American tour with Men At Work and explains what it has been like introducing the band to a different audience. She also talks about the group’s close friendship with Australian band Regurgitator, following their recent Japanese tour together.

One of the major topics is the Osaka Ramones set, which Shonen Knife first performed in Tokyo in 1995. Yamano explains how the concept developed into the Osaka Ramones album and why the band continues to receive requests to perform the Ramones material.

Yamano also recalls touring the United Kingdom with Nirvana in 1991 and teaching Kurt Cobain the guitar chords to “Twist Barbie” for a secret gig.

The interview covers Shonen Knife favourites including “Twist Barbie”, “Riding On A Rocket”, “Banana Chips”, “Buttercup” and “ESP”, as well as the band’s enormous catalogue of recorded music.

Yamano reveals that she plans to write more than 10 new Shonen Knife songs by the end of 2026, with recording for the next album planned for early 2027.

ZED51 - Under two months to go… get onboard the real action with ZED51!

Let’s call this medium for what it is… a virtual s**theap of pretence and surveillance. The main way we spread word about stuff via these broken shells that fail to convey the energy of anything let alone a live music show. Really - we are reduced to this. Bring back the days of crude matt paper based street press to rip it all to shreds. Or tune yourselves into community radio riding the airwaves of an actual community. F**k… this context even leaves some thinking it is all unjust machine generated text. Hard to blame. Like why would you bother… scraping words off a screen of thought like some dope addled automation. Intelligence is an artifice. Like the wave of smart phones diluting experience into second hand transmission. Without question. No answers worth the satisfaction. So yeah in the boredom of repetition throwing scraps at a shattering of windows to coax your attention - you knew it last year cause you run your hearts ragged in noise and emotion. Under 2 months out. Enough said. Stoke this bird basket into the frenzy it deserves.

The album’s original success was famously due to Nirvana. In 1992 Kurt Cobain revealed his obsession with the Japanese trio, calling them ‘his favourite band’ and asking them to tour with him. Shonen Knife had never heard of Nirvana but eagerly took advantage of the opportunity. They quickly put together Let’s Knife out of their best songs, recording them in English and headed to the USA as national touring guests of Nirvana.

Operations of amateur intent tend to cut perfectly through the cultural fabric so manifest in this ragged stage of affairs… Dave has a special way of bringing it all back inside the home. Holes in hearts, cuts to skin… professional advice matters musically in qualifying the tunes that slice their way free.

David McCormack’s TRS80 has a new single out and it’s called “Home Surgery”. As much a short tour operating in theatres of minds across September - cutting up dates and domains as listed below. Along the way introducing some friends of similar music discourse; TREVOR LUDLOW AND THE HELLRAISERS in Melbourne; THE STRESS OF LEISURE in Brisbane; and MAP ENDS in Sydney.

We all know that saving money on healthcare is a real concern, hence doing basic surgery on yourself or family members at home can be a safe and effective option — and it can end up saving you a lot more with no complications, zero infections, and definitely no emergency care required.

“I find doing surgery at home a lot like being in a band” says singer/guitarist Dave McCormack. “You invite a few people over, everyone picks up an instrument and digs in and has a go. It’s fun. Sure, there can be a bit of a mess by the end, but like they say, ‘it’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll’”

David McCormack tends to slip out from the cracks in this world… as perception shifts around us and across time travelled he takes the hubris we are left to roll in at times ,and leisurely cuts it up into the rhymes we drag behind us. With latest incursion into the barbed labyrinth of musical decorum TRS-80 - he has enlisted Adele Pickvance (GoBetweens, Chandeliers on bass/keyboards) and Nick Naughton (Biro, Anchors on drums) to help hunt down the foes of our musical imagination and turn out a swathe of delicate numbers to balance our everyday emotions upon.
