We’ve been terrible at introducing ourselves on here 😅⁣

Partly because we’re much more comfortable talking about brains, behaviour and all things neurodivergence than we are talking about ourselves.⁣

And partly because we’re both a little camera shy (but meet us in real life and good luck getting us to stop talking).⁣

So, we figured it was probably time for a proper hello.⁣

We’re the psychologists behind Pocket Psych 👋 We created this little corner of the internet to make psychology more practical, more neuroaffirming and a whole lot easier to actually use.⁣

Whether you’re a parent, educator, practitioner, or you just stumbled across one of our posts and thought “ohhhh… that makes sense”, we’re really glad you’re here.⁣

And to everyone who has followed, shared our posts, bought our resources, recommended us or sent us a lovely message along the way, thank you 💜⁣

We appreciate the support more than you know.⁣

Okay, introductions officially done. Back behind the illustrations we go 😅⁣

Sometimes the problem isn’t that nobody is trying.⁣

It’s that everyone is working from a framework that assumes we’ll be able to see when a student is struggling.⁣

For many neurodivergent girls, we can’t.⁣

Good grades can coexist with burnout.⁣
Compliance can coexist with distress.⁣
Friendships can coexist with intense social exhaustion.⁣
A student can get through the school day and still be paying an enormous price for it.⁣

So support can’t only respond to what adults can observe.⁣

We need to get curious about effort, capacity, sensory load, masking and what it actually costs her to keep appearing “fine.”⁣

Because the goal shouldn’t be helping her become even better at coping invisibly.⁣

It should be making school a place where she doesn’t have to.⁣

Sometimes the hardest part of being undiagnosed isn’t not having a label.⁣

It’s the explanation you create instead.⁣

I’m lazy.⁣
I’m too much.⁣
I need to try harder.⁣
Something is wrong with me.⁣

Understanding your neurodivergence doesn’t erase the struggle. But it can change the story from self-blame to self-understanding.⁣

And that’s where self-compassion begins.⁣

Understanding a teens digital world when supporting their mental health matters... but it's tricky! The science and the measures aren't keeping up with the changes. How they live online looks VERY different to how we live online... So we made a guide. To help with the language. To break it down. To be honest and to let them make their 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

I have yet to chat to a teen with a phone that doesn't want to change their screen use in some way. This guide is about supporting them to change in line with what they value.

I think about academic pressure a lot. Especially in the context of school refusal. I regularly talk to parents who have been sold the idea that this pressure is key to 'success'. And honestly this isn't about teachers. To say they are working hard in challenging conditions is an understatement. But working with so many amazing ND kids helps me understand in my BONES that this pressure isn't necessary- or even helpful. My wish is that we all step back a little and think about what kind of childhood we want for our teens. And stopped assuming that the intense pressure so many of our kids receive during their high school years is actually helpful.

Calling it “escape behaviour” might accurately describe its function. But it shouldn’t be where our curiosity ends.⁣

If a child is struggling to attend school, we also need to ask: what has made school something they need to escape from?⁣

Sensory overwhelm, social exhaustion, learning difficulties, burnout, unmet support needs — the behaviour is only one part of the picture.⁣

Sometimes supporting a change in behaviour means changing the environment around it.⁣

Sometimes the child isn’t dysregulated. Sometimes the situation is just unfair.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We talk a lot about teaching children emotion regulation.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But I think we need to be careful that “they need to regulate better” doesn’t become our automatic response whenever a child becomes distressed.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A child takes longer to finish an assessment, so they miss the free time everyone else gets.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A child becomes overwhelmed by a noisy classroom, but the goal becomes tolerating the noise.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A child holds it together all day, falls apart at home, and the focus becomes managing the meltdown.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Of course, emotional regulation skills matter.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But so does asking:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Was the expectation reasonable?⁣⁣
Was the environment accessible?⁣⁣
Was the child's distress actually understandable given what happened?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Because sometimes the most effective intervention isn’t another regulation strategy.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It’s changing the thing they’re being asked to regulate themselves through.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
As clinicians, parents and educators, our job isn’t only to help children cope with their environments.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Sometimes, it’s to advocate for environments that ask less coping of them.⁣⁣

Everyone thought she was doing fine.⁣

Meanwhile, she was watching, copying, rehearsing and trying to get it "right".⁣

She wasn't finding it easy. She'd just gotten really good at hiding how hard it was.⁣

What if we've been thinking about self-regulation all wrong?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We expect neurodivergent children to regulate independently, but many adults don't even do that when they're overwhelmed.⁣
