MOBILITY 2026: FINAL CALL FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS

With just one week remaining to submit an abstract, now is the time to be part of the conversation shaping Australia’s transport mobility future.

Australia’s premier transport mobility conference, Mobility 2026, is heading to Brisbane on 27–28 May, bringing together leading experts, innovators and decision makers to explore how technology and collaboration are powering the next era of connected, accessible and sustainable transport. Under this year’s theme - Powering Seamless Mobility - the program will spotlight real world applications, pilot programs and global insights that are turning integrated mobility from ambition into reality.

Abstract submissions are open for innovative research, practical case studies and forward-thinking ideas across sustainable and active transport, on demand mobility, smart payments and ticketing, energy transition, accessibility, and emerging technologies including AI and Mobility as a Service.
Submissions will be reviewed by an expert panel, with successful presenters invited to share their work in person with Australia’s transport leaders.
This is more than a call for abstracts - it’s an opportunity to influence policy, inform practice and help shape the next chapter of mobility in Australia. Don’t miss your chance to contribute.

The Centenary Bridge Upgrade is a $353.5 million infrastructure project designed to increase capacity and improve safety on the Centenary Bridge in Jindalee. The bridge forms part of the Centenary Motorway, which links Ipswich, Queensland’s fastest growing area, to the Brisbane central business district and the national road networks.

The project required a durable, efficient void panel system for the precast bridge girders forming the new northbound bridge decks. Traditional materials, such as plywood and fibre cement sheeting, posed issues with weather resistance, weight and labour requirements.

Seeking a more effective solution, the Georgiou/BMD Joint Venture selected Fielders KingFlor® 40 (KF40®).

AVETTA ONE SCRM HELPING TO REDUCE ROAD TRANSPORT RISKS

Avetta®, a leading provider of supply chain risk management (SCRM) software, recently announced a first-of-its-kind strategic partnership with BG Road Safety, a leading specialised consultancy focused on reducing road transport risks. The collaboration is the latest addition to Avetta’s global partner program and centres around a new road transport module in the AI-powered Avetta One SCRM platform.

For Australian organisations, the partnership comes amid heightened regulatory and governance scrutiny around road transport risk. Under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), Chain of Responsibility (CoR) obligations extend across the entire supply chain, while workplace health and safety (WHS) legislation places clear duties on persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) to eliminate or minimise risks so far as is reasonably practicable, even when transport activities are outsourced.

The new Avetta assessment tool redefines how organisations evaluate and elevate transport safety performance, giving Australian clients unmatched confidence in their suppliers’ road safety practices while empowering those suppliers to stand out as proven leaders in safety through Avetta prequalification.

ACC AND HEXAGON UPGRADE NATIONAL DISPATCH SYSTEM FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE

The Australian Club Consortium (ACC) and Hexagon announced the launch of a fully managed, cloud-hosted dispatch platform, marking a major milestone in their long-standing national technology partnership.

This upgrade will deepen a decade of collaboration and set a new benchmark for cloud-managed dispatch services in the roadside assistance sector.

Built on HxGN OnCall and hosted on Microsoft Azure, the platform enables all five ACC-member clubs - RACQ (Queensland), RAC (Western Australia), RAA (South Australia), RACT (Tasmania) and AANT (Northern Territory) - to maintain local operations while benefiting from a nationally integrated, resilient cloud service.

CEA TO TAKE ON AUSTRALIAN SANY EXCAVATOR DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS FOR KEY STATES ACROSS AUSTRALIA

CEA recently announced its appointment as a distributor for SANY excavators in key states throughout Australia, commencing operations in QLD, NSW and SA. As an emerging brand within the excavator market, SANY has quickly gained strong customer acceptance globally thanks to its build quality, competitive pricing and aftermarket offering. Acquiring the distribution rights for SANY aligns with CEA’s wider business strategy - supporting its appetite for growth across key market segments.
SANY, founded in 1989, is a significant global supplier of excavators with a footprint of R&D centres and manufacturing plants in countries including China, USA, Germany, India, and Brazil. ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA CONGRATULATES AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR KATHERINE BENNELL-PEGG

Engineers Australia has congratulated the 2026 Australian of the Year, Astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg FIEAust, the first person to train and qualify as an astronaut under the Australian flag.

Katherine is an aeronautical and space engineer, a fellow of Engineers Australia, and in 2025 was named South Australian Professional Engineer of the Year by Engineers Australia.

National President and Board Chair Tom Goerke said Katherine’s perseverance and dedication to achieving her dreams is an inspiration.

“Congratulations to Katherine Bennell-Pegg. Her leadership as an aeronautical and space engineer in the space sector demonstrates the significant contribution Australian engineers make to the profession both here and the world stage,” Mr Goerke said.

Australia may be recording decade-high apprentice completions, but the number of new apprentices entering blue-collar trades is still far too low to meet industry demand. Hunter Valley tradie, Brad Harold, says his own story shows exactly what young people stand to gain by choosing the path to logistics and construction through an apprenticeship.
Brad began as an apprentice auto electrician with Boom Logistics in 2002 and has since worked his way through maintenance, supervision, operations and business management to now lead regional operations across NSW and Victoria. He emphasises that the opportunities available for apprentices today are far greater than many school leavers realise, yet the number stepping forward remains stubbornly low.
“If I didn’t start as an apprentice 23 years ago, I wouldn’t be where I am now,” Brad said. “There are huge career pathways in trades, real leadership opportunities, and the chance to work on major projects that keep this country running. But we simply don’t have enough new apprentices coming through, and the industry is feeling the pressure.”

A new report examines how existing Austroads guidance addresses the geometric design requirements needed to accommodate large freight vehicles (LFVs). The report focuses on the physical space and layout required for safe and efficient LFV operations, rather than vehicle mass.
“Innovation in vehicle design has delivered major productivity gains for the road transport industry in recent years,” said Amy Naulls, Austroads Transport Network Operations Program Manager. “We’ve seen more larger vehicle combinations, and strong industry support for use of vehicles such as B-doubles.”
Road agencies in Australia and New Zealand support the use of LFVs wherever possible due to their potential to improve productivity, safety, and sustainability outcomes. However, the Austroads guides need to be updated to consider the dimensions and performance capabilities of current and future LFVs.
The report reviews several Austroads guides to identify where updates may be needed to better accommodate LFVs. These include the Austroads Guide to Road Design, Guide to Road Tunnels, Design Vehicles and Turning Path Templates, Guide to Traffic Management, and Guide to Pavement Technology.
