More than 100 locals turned out at the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School (Bullengarook Campus) for an urgent community meeting tonight.
The meeting provided residents with an update on the current fire situation.
John Deering, Incident Controller CFA advised that there was a breakout today that started to head towards Waterloo Flat Road but that the fire was contained within its perimeter by the four helicopters, two planes, around 40 people and excavators on the ground.
Mr Deering said the weather is expected to be kind on Monday and Tuesday with low temperatures and low humidity, but that he held a very clear, genuine concern about Wednesday and even more so, Thursday.
From Sunday extra people are coming from further afield and gathering at the recreation reserve on Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road, he said.
Tim Tucker, Inspector from Vic Pol advised residents to call 000 not the local police station; to download the Vic Emergency app; and spoke of the traffic diversions at Waterloo Flat Rd, and Bacchus-Gisborne Rd/Coffey Rd.
In what some might say is a little too late, we learned that Telstra will be bringing equipment to enhance their phone and internet services the following day.
Amy Holmes, Acting Director Community Services at Macedon Ranges Shire Council emphasised the establishment of an emergency shelter at the Kyneton Racecourse and offered assistance moving livestock to safer ground. Council’s mayor was also in attendance to support residents.
After a lengthy Q&A, the meeting ended with several expressing their gratitude for the tremendous efforts of CFA volunteers, Forest Fire Victoria staff and police to protect our community.
