Skin tags are often dismissed as a harmless nuisance — something to snip, freeze or ignore. But, they can be a quiet metabolic clue, a cryptic hint from your body that something is awry and requires your attention!

Skin Tags are a symptom of insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance occurs when your cells stop responding efficiently to insulin — the hormone that helps move glucose (sugar) from your bloodstream into your cells for energy. To compensate, your body produces more insulin.

Over time, this elevated insulin environment can stimulate excess skin cell growth, showing up as skin tags, especially around the neck, underarms, under breasts, and groin.

Here’s the important part: insulin resistance is the step before type 2 diabetes. Blood sugar levels may still appear “normal,” but behind the scenes, your metabolism is under strain. The skin, being a visible and responsive organ, often speaks first. The good news? Insulin resistance is reversible — and food is the most powerful place to start.

Begin by stabilising blood sugar. Eat balanced meals that pair protein, healthy fats and fibre with carbohydrates. Think eggs with vegetables, salmon with leafy greens, yoghurt with nuts and berries. Avoid naked carbs — toast, juice, alcohol or cereal — as these spike insulin quickly.

Reduce ultra-processed foods and added sugars, prioritise whole foods, and aim for regular movement after meals, even a 10-minute walk. Sleep, stress management and mineral sufficiency (hello magnesium and chromium) also play supporting roles.

Skin tags aren’t just cosmetic. They’re an invitation — to listen, rebalance and nourish your body back into harmony.
