🌟 Announcing our 2025 Humanitarian of the Year! 🌟

💛 This week, we celebrated Australians who embody Fred Hollows' vision of compassion and action, and we're thrilled to announce Marie Tesoriero from NSW as our 2025 Fred Hollows Humanitarian of the Year!

Born with multiple disabilities, Marie has turned her challenges into a mission to give back — raising thousands through her handmade crafts initiative, Made by Cool Marie, for children’s hospitals, disability support, and medical research. Her resilience and kindness inspire us all. 👏

Join us in celebrating Marie and all our incredible changemakers, and read more about them at 👉 https://www.hollows.org/latest-news/2025-humanitarian-of-the-year

PRPH2-associated retinal dystrophy is one of the most common inherited retinal diseases in Western Australia - but there’s still much to uncover about how it develops.

That’s why our 2025 funded researcher Dr Samuel McLenachan and his team at the Lions Eye Institute, University of Western Australia, are studying how different variations in the PRPH2 gene and related genes influence how this condition appears and progresses. By deepening our understanding of these genetic changes, their research could lead to more accurate diagnoses and better predictions for people living with inherited retinal diseases.

A growing number of pharmacies have begun promoting dry eye disease (DED) diagnosis and in-practice device-based therapies such as IPL.

Optometry Australia warns that these services fall outside the scope of pharmacy practice and risk compromising patient safety.

Accurate DED diagnosis and management require specialised ocular assessment and evidence-based care under the supervision of qualified optometrists or ophthalmologists — not pharmacy ‘technicians’.

We’re on the cusp of a breakthrough in glaucoma treatment — and we need your help to get there. 🙏💙

“Current glaucoma treatments don’t work for 1 in 5 patients. That’s simply not good enough,” says Associate Professor Andrew White from the Westmead Institute for Medical Research.

Thanks to funding from Glaucoma Australia’s Quinlivan Research Grant, his team is testing an innovative new treatment using an anti-inflammatory drug called irbesartan. Their goal? To develop a safe and effective eyedrop that can prevent nerve damage and stop vision loss caused by glaucoma.

This world-first trial could change the future of glaucoma care — but research like this relies on your support.

✨ Donate today to help researchers turn bold ideas into lifechanging treatments and cures.
