Sunday 15th June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, an awareness initiative marked each year to provide an opportunity for communities to stand together against abuse, mistreatment and neglect of older people.
The World Health Organisation estimates that one in six people over the age of 60 have suffered abuse, whether that be physical abuse and neglect, psychological and emotional abuse, sexual abuse, or financial abuse.
As a leading Elder Law Firm, we are dedicated to playing a leading role in protecting the interests of older people in our community through education, awareness, and advocacy.
The Queensland Government is undertaking a Parliamentary Inquiry into Elder Abuse, at which our Aged Care Partner and Accredited Aged Care Professional, Debbie Sage, recently presented a submission highlighting the urgent need for stronger protections for older Queenslanders.
Debbie's submission underscores the prevalence of financial, emotional, and physical abuse, often perpetrated by trusted individuals such as family members or caregivers.
She advocates for;
- The establishment of a comprehensive reporting system and investigative procedure that enables consistent reporting of elder abuse and provides frontline workers with clear guidelines.
- The implementation of legislation that specifically criminalises elder abuse.
- The enhancement of oversight of Powers of Attorney to prevent misuse and protect the financial interests of vulnerable adults.
- The adoption of a supported decision making framework that will empower older adults with impaired capacity while providing the necessary support.
