Food & Travel – A Perfect Pairing and a fundamental ethos of FNQ Food Magazine.

They say travel is about experiencing a place, and what better way to do that than through its food? In FNQ, every meal tells a story—whether it’s fresh reef fish by the ocean, tropical fruits straight from the farm, or Indigenous flavours with ancient roots. Taste the journey.

Shout out from my desk to the team working with FNQ Food, all volunteering their time, skills and determination to display the essence of Christmas spirit. From potatoes to dinner plates, catering for anything is challenging, let alone organising transport, donations, decorations and delivery trucks, etc etc. However, with no infrastructure, no venue, not even a chair, with a four day lead in it is a path for most to insanity. But these guys have taken it in their stride. Jodie Ferrero Claire Howells Sharon Timms Kane Brown Nicole Gibson Bridey Walsh all putting aside their work, their affiliations and in some cases, their families - to do something that might ease just a tiny bit of the pain of our neighbours. There can be no doubting the humanity of those 100s who have joined the mud army and other groups in response to the disaster, whose daily slog tobring help to those who need it most, the group being rallied by Bree James with Sue Fitcher and the force of nature Jo Piggott also should be highly commended. They are all involved not only in cleanup but also in this event. Not all heroes wear capes, some have shovels, gloves, frying pans, clipboards or mobile phones glued to their ears, or just clarity of vision. All are part of a miracle that will last long past Christmas. I can’t help the feeling that if Mary came here, today, no one would let her give birth in a lowly stable. Be proud of these people, not just the headliners, but the rank and file, the broad-shouldered stoics, the weary and reliable - the best of us. Merry Christmas.

Well it’s here!
Big, shiny and full of words and at final page count of 164 pages this is the biggest publication the Far North has seen in years.

It’s been hard work, from a roller coaster of market confidence to paper shortages, there hasn’t been an aspect of production that hasn’t been effected by Covid.

But it’s done now, and we can get on with our regular business of inspiring tourism. For that’s what we believe in micro, macro, local, regional, domestic and eventually international, food and drink is an essential part of the attraction process. Whether we travel from the other side of the world or the other side of town we are all tourists. What we eat and drink and where we go for it are the foundations of experiential travel and the boon of our regional economy. We have turned eating from an essential part of life into a celebration of friendship, produce and entertainment.

The message from all those involved and featured in this multi channel publication is one of unity, mutual local support and collective and individual pride. It’s been both humbling and inspiring to discover the people, places and produce behind food and beverage in FNQ and my privilege to be instrumental in assembling those stories for your consumption! I urge you to read them all, eat the food, drink the drink and be part of the amazing that is FNQ Food!

Not bad going, especially as it has been all done at our own cost. With the COVID effect still throttling businesses, hospitality needs all the help it can get!

Our mission has always been to raise the profile of and develop the community that makes, eats and enjoys the unique food and drink available in Far North Queensland.

In November we made over 800 food-related Facebook posts, reached Tens of thousands of locals and visitors and, with your help, we managed to raise the profile our tag from over 1,000 mentions to over 5,000.

We thank you all, and so do all those involved in the industry that is Far North Queensland Food (and Drink)!
