In a groundbreaking move for animal lovers across the state, Victoria has officially legalised joint human-and-pet burials, thanks to an amendment led by Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell.
The reform, which has now passed Parliament, will soon become law – allowing Victorians to be laid to rest alongside their beloved pets in family plots for the first time.
Victoria becomes only the second state in Australia, after New South Wales, to recognise the right for people and their animals to share an eternal resting place.
Georgie said the change reflects how deeply Australians value the bond between humans and animals.
“For many of us, our pets are family,” she said. “This change honours that bond and gives people the right to rest eternally beside their best friends.”
The push gained strong support from Castlemaine Cemetery – situated in Campbells Creek – and long-time animal welfare advocate Deb Tranter from Oscar’s Law.
Georgie described the reform as “a victory for Victorians, their companion animals, and the love that connects them – which can now be honoured forever.”
