During the pandemic, between 2020-2021, Jason Mellard, Eddie Wilson, Sandra Wilson, and myself, recorded a series of conversations with the people who made Austin the “cultural center of the universe”. One such wonder is the recently departed Dave Richards, the legendary Texas’ civil rights litigator, author, as well as husband, father, grandfather of powerful women, including Nancy Novak, his daughter Cecile Richards, (founder of Planned Parenthood) and of course, former wife, TX Governor, Anne Richards. Our hearts are with Dave’s family, during this loss.

Pictured here: Eddie Wilson, Dave Richards with Nancy Novak, and Jason Mellard, all in their home offices. I am in quarantine in Auckland, New Zealand, waiting to be released to film Lucy Lawless’ tv show, My Life Is Murder.

The podcast, Austin Sounds, produced & distributed by TSSI, with Eddie Wilson, Jason Mellard, and the cultural light bearers, who made Austin what it is today, will be released next year.

One of my all time favourite people!

Katherine, nine years ago, I remember your excitement for receiving the life rights to Christy Martin’s story. Your fearlessness, your fight to bring her story to the screen (representing your strength to overcome your own story of domestic violence) is layered in the foundation of this truly independent film. Your writing about the isolation, and the fear, one that even a champion woman boxer can feel, was unflinching. Thank you for being our champion.

Reposting • , the film
Nine years ago, small town that filled me with shame because of who I was. I grew up in home filled with domestic violence and lived with that dread never knowing what would make my stepfather snap. I was honored to option Christy’s life rights. Every dream starts somewhere and it was that singular decision to write that letter to connect with someone out there, a stranger, that was the first step that would eventually become a movie playing in movie theaters. The film is so beautifully crafted, lovingly made, and a powerful and intense film about overcoming shame and emerging victorious against domestic violence. It is about finally choosing yourself. Christy’s powerful story needed to be told so all of us could join her in feeling emboldened to fight back against a society that desperately tries to turn us into someone else.

About AUSXIP

AUSXIP was created on 15 December 1996 by MaryD for Australian Xena Warrior Princess and Lucy Lawless Fans. In July 1997, Mary added The Renee O'Connor Information Page as the first site to leave the main AUSXIP page in July 1997.. Since then it has grown to encompass other shows and actors. AUSXIP is a non-profit network of sites whose main goal is to promote and showcase strong female characters in books, movies, tv and web shows.

AUSXIP strives to be a respectful and positive site for news and multimedia related to the various shows and actors it covers and to the fandom.

AUSXIP has a charity site where we hold our annual auction. AUSXIP Charity Auction is a site dedicated to raising money for The Starship Foundation which is AUSXIP's official charity and other charities when required. The site is 100% free and 100% of the money goes to the nominated charity without fees being involved. For more about the AUSXIP Charity section go to AUSXIP For the Greater Good
