St Anthony’s Primary School in Wanniassa became the first ACT school to receive a flag that once flew over The Lodge — the Prime Minister’s residence.

The flag was presented to the school’s two Year 6 captains, Malachi Brown and Asha De La Mezzo, by Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, Patrick Gorman, as part of a program sharing retired flags with schools across the country.

Also in attendance was Mr David Smith MP, Member for Bean, who praised St Anthony’s for its strong community spirit and engagement.

Federal Education Minister Jason Clare visited St Mary MacKillop College Canberra on Monday, getting a firsthand look at how the Catalyst approach is transforming teaching and learning across Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn.

During his tour, he met students and staff, observed lessons in Mathematics and Religious Education, and visited the Trade Training Centre. Mr Clare said he was inspired by the passion of teachers and the confidence of students.

“I've heard about the great things Catholic Education are doing here, but it's another thing to see it face to face. It's a great opportunity to see leadership in action, but also to see the next generation of Australians coming to life. This school truly offers one-on-one support from passionate teachers. They care about the students and are preparing them for the next steps, whether it’s TAFE, university, or the workforce.”

Principal Michael Lee said the visit was a welcome opportunity to showcase the College’s learning culture and the impact of the Catalyst framework.

“As principal and leader of learning here, I'm really encouraged and reassured that we have a Minister for Education who doesn't just live in the abstract, but is keen to come into schools and visit classrooms and to talk to teachers and students. He engaged really well with our kids.”

More than 30 parishioners from Mary Help Of Christians Parish, South Woden, gathered for the Public Rosary in Mawson earlier this month, for what Vivienne Pembrey described as a truly uplifting experience.

“It was so beautiful to see not just our parishioners, but people from other churches coming together. People stopped to watch, listen, and ponder. There’s a real sense of togetherness when you pray in a group — everyone left feeling happy and full of spirit.”

Led by parish priest Fr. Emil Milat, the event is part of the international Public Square Rosary initiative, held throughout October, commemorating the last Marian apparition in Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun.

Fr Emil said it was heartening to see local shopkeepers and passers-by watching with respect.

“Public prayer is a witness to our faith,” he said. “It invites others to reflect or even join in.”

"I have the privilege to walk into classrooms often, and when I see a teacher in full flight – a well-paced lesson, active student engagement when they are learning something they never knew before – I’m reminded why this work matters. It’s those moments of learning, of potential being realised, that sit at the heart of everything we do in Catholic Education Canberra-Goulburn."

Working at the forefront of evidence-based learning, Catholic Education- Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Education Lead Patrick Ellis has championed equity and excellence across the 56 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese, positively impacting the lives of more than 22,000 students.

St Benedict’s Primary School celebrated its 70th anniversary today with a full 10am Mass attended by past and present students, staff, families and parishioners.

Founded in 1955 by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan and later the Dutch Sisters of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the school’s spirit of faith and community is still strong.

Former students from the first classes returned to share memories, and Principal Alanna Quirk said the milestone celebrates “who we are and where we’ve come from.”

A proud day for a school built on faith, family and community.
