THANK YOU!

More than 200 people sent in a submission to the public consultation on the Nature Conservation (Buru—Eastern Grey Kangaroo—Draft Controlled Native Species Management Plan) 2025 using our template!

In the last round of consultation on the 2017 plan, only 43 submissions were made so we can be really proud that more than four times that were submitted this time round 🙏🏼

We sincerely hope the ACT Governments takes all the submissions in good faith and accepts the recommendations that us and other organisations like , and Animal Protectors Alliance have made!

Thank you again to all our supporters!

Kangaroos, wallabies, dingoes and now wombats… Will there be any native species left that the ACT Government won’t authorise the killing of?!

The ACT is the only state or territory that doesn’t permit the issuing of licenses to kill wombats, but that might be about to change. The ACT Government has created a document about “managing” wombats in the ACT, and we all know what managing means… There is even the potential for wombats to become a “controlled native species”, just like kangaroos are, and we all know how awful that has been for the plight of kangaroos 💔

Founder and president of Wombat Rescue, Yolandi Vermaak, said the report “seems to be based largely on perception” and anecdotal evidence rather than facts.

“It’s very concerning when they talk about significant policy change from how the ACT has managed wombats, and they base that on the anecdotal evidence of three farmers,” Ms Vermaak said.

The ACT Government’s Draft Kangaroo Management Plan is open for public submissions, but time is running out! You have just 3 days left to make your voice heard. 📝

Kangaroos are not pests. They are wild, sentient animals with an important role in maintaining healthy grasslands, controlling vegetation, and supporting biodiversity. Yet the government’s plan allows for culling, putting thousands of these gentle creatures at risk.

Your submission can help shape a future where kangaroos are protected, not killed. Opportunities like this only come around once every few years, so it’s vital that every supporter takes action.

💡 What you can do:

Use the simple template from Save Canberra's Kangaroos to make a submission in minutes.

Share your personal concerns about kangaroo welfare and the ecological importance of these animals.

Encourage friends, family, and your community to speak up too.

📌 Submit now:https://savecanberraskangaroos.good.do/savecanberraskangaroos/KMPsubmission/?

Every voice counts. Stand up for Canberra’s kangaroos before it’s too late, submissions close on December 18.

Joeys growing up in the care of humans know how to be kangaroos even though they have experienced the traumatic loss of their mum - their best teacher. They develop an appropriate flight response when faced with a perceived threat, they know they should be safe in a pouch (even if it is made of cloth), they learn what to eat and drink from their buddies and from their human carers. They are hard-wired to behave like kangaroos in training.
This little joey knows instinctively that themeda - kangaroo grass - is YUMMY. It's like giving an ice-cream to a human baby. ❤🦘

...And the other three reasons why Canberra residents are not permitted to rescue, raise or rehabilitate Eastern Grey Kangaroos?

*There is a risk of injuries from large male kangaroos that were originally hand-reared
*Hand reared animals have a much higher death rate than naturally reared animals if released to the wild rather than protected environments
*They are often more vulnerable to predators such as dogs and foxes as they have not learnt an appropriate recognition and flight response.

Residents of other Australian states who ARE permitted to rescue, raise or rehabilitate eastern grey kangaroos....could you share YOUR experiences with us please?

02/12/2025

Under the Controlled Native Species Act, the ACT Government will not allow wildlife carers to rescue, rehabilitate or release Eastern Grey Kangaroos, unlike ALL other jurisdictions in Australia. There are four reasons cited for this stance.

The first is: ''There is no conservation justification for hand-rearing and releasing EGK (joeys) because they are an abundant species''.

This ignores the fact that kangaroos are sentient native animals and results in cruelty being permitted by government due to the actions or inactions of humans.
(Example: mother kangaroo hit by car, surviving viable joey must be killed by an ACT ranger using blunt force trauma or left to die a slow death by neglect or absence of care).
