Writing for Screen – Q&A with Michael Lucas | Canberra Writers Festival

Want to write a TV series or adapt a work for screen? This is an unmissable chance to learn from multi-award winning screenwriter Michael Lucas. Michael is a multi-award-winning screenwriter. He made his debut with the indie feature comedy, Not Suitable For Children, directed by Peter Templeman. Released in 2012, it was selected to open the Sydney Film Festival, was nominated for five Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards and won Michael the Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Best Original Feature Film Screenplay.

This is your chance to ask questions and get behind-the-scenes advice. Michael will share: screen highlights to illustrate how his scripts came to life; the power of fantastic dialogue; strategies for keeping audiences on the edge of their seats; and what to do when you need to strike the page, clear your head and start again.

Grief and Glamour in Hollywood: In Conversation with Griffin Dunne | Canberra Writers Festival

Hollywood royalty meets heartbreaking reality. ✨Join Griffin Dunne — acclaimed actor, director, producer and author of The Friday Afternoon Club — for an unforgettable conversation about growing up amidst the dazzling chaos of Hollywood. With Joan Didion as his aunt and Carrie Fisher as his best friend, Griffin’s world was filled with stars and surreal stories — from being saved from drowning by Sean Connery, to working with Martin Scorsese, Meg Ryan, Sandra Bullock, and Nicole Kidman. Griffin’s memoir doesn’t just reveal the wildness of fame, but also the devastating loss of his sister Dominique.

In this intimate event, Griffin sits down with Toby Schmitz — Australia’s master of stage and screen, and author of The Empress Murders — for a raw, funny, and heartfelt conversation about family, fame, and finding meaning through pain. Screen Canberra proudly sponsors this session at the Canberra Writers' Festival.
