This volume of 'Aboriginal History Journal' opens with Christopher Morton’s careful consideration of the provenance of a Wiradjuri or Gamilaroi marara (tree carving), tracing the likely route it took to its current location on display at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford.

Congratulations to Madeleine Regan who recently launched her new book ‘“I buy this piece of ground here”: An Italian market-gardener community in Adelaide, 1920s–1970s’.

This biography examines the lives and work of a cohort of Italian migrant families from the Veneto region who arrived in Australia in the 1920s and formed a new community and identity as market gardeners in outer suburban Adelaide.

Speakers included Aida Innocente (MC), Associate Professor Christine Winter and South Australia’s History Advocate Dr Kiera Lindsey, who all celebrated this remarkable tribute to migration, family, land and tradition.

"PNG is in a trap, in which hyper-politics and insecurity combine to produce, and are reinforced by, a weak but stable state, and low and increasingly resource-dependent growth."

‘Struggle, Reform, Boom and Bust’, a comprehensive economic history of Papua New Guinea, is a timely and significant work marking the 50th anniversary of PNG’s independence. It carefully documents key events and adds fresh analysis to show both the strengths and weaknesses of PNG’s economy.

Our latest title examines the global debate on China's influence and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Western democracies often view China’s role negatively, citing authoritarianism, debt traps and neglect of human rights and environmental standards. In contrast, Chinese analysts and many in the developing world see China’s economic power and the BRI as drivers of development and global trade.

This stark contrast in perspectives poses a significant challenge for policymakers seeking to assess China’s true impact on the global order.

Our forthcoming title makes two significant contributions to the study of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

First, it adopts a bottom-up empirical approach, analysing the roles and perspectives of both Chinese actors and local recipients of BRI projects.

Second, it brings Japan into the conversation as a key player in international aid and investment. By highlighting Japan’s role as a major donor, the book offers a more nuanced understanding that challenges binary narratives around the BRI’s global standards and effectiveness.

‘The claim that Horner is a supremo of Australian military history rests not only in this prodigious scholarship but also in his role in establishing and developing this field as a subject of serious academic study in Australia.’

‘Military History Supremo’ honours David Horner’s long career of service to history and the nation. Prominent authors pay tribute to Horner’s legacy by engaging with his scholarship, applying his conclusions to new case studies and contexts, reflecting and expanding on the subjects he addressed and the methodologies he employed, and pushing the boundaries of the discipline he was instrumental in founding.
