🐾 Golden Retriever Home Grooming Starter Kit (Amateur Edition) 🐾

Golden Retrievers are beautiful dogs.

They are also basically made of fur. 😂

This is our home grooming setup for Yoshi. We're not professional groomers, just trying to stay on top of the endless coat maintenance that comes with living with a Golden Retriever.

🪮 Our basic kit includes:

✔️ Slicker brush for removing loose coat and helping prevent tangles
✔️ Metal comb for checking behind the ears, legs, tail, and feathering
✔️ Nail grinder and clippers for nail maintenance
✔️ Grooming dryer/blower to help dry the coat and remove loose undercoat
✔️ Pet wipes for quick clean-ups between baths
✔️ Grooming scissors (not pictured) for the occasional tidy-up around paws and feathering

🏠 The unsung heroes?
🧺 Towels. Lots of towels.
💨 A good vacuum cleaner.

No matter how much brushing you do, Golden Retriever glitter somehow finds its way into every corner of the house.

A few things we've learned along the way:

🐕 Little and often is easier than marathon grooming sessions.
🐕 Introduce tools gradually and make grooming a positive experience.
🐕 Check ears, paws, nails, and coat regularly rather than waiting for problems to appear.
🐕 Grooming is about more than appearance. It's also an opportunity to build trust, confidence, and cooperative care skills.

Yoshi wasn't always a fan of grooming. These days she knows the routine. We brush, dry, trim what needs trimming, and afterwards she heads straight back to her bed for a well-earned nap. 😴

Golden Retriever owners, what's the one grooming tool you couldn't live without?

The last photo of Yoshi asleep afterwards is gold. It tells the whole story: grooming complete, job done, nap time. 🐾😴

Today was a big day for little paws🐾

After surviving an hour long human meeting at the café, we headed off on a training adventure to the museum.

Safe to say… Yoshi has never seen TVs that big before 😂

There were random surround sounds coming from everywhere, dark rooms, echoey spaces, giant displays up high, strange lighting, and even a dinosaur skeleton with LOTS of bones. Despite all of that, she stayed thoughtful, calm, and worked through everything so well.

We then stopped by Spotlight so the human could stare at fabric colours for far too long while Yoshi patiently supervised from the floor like a tiny exhausted manager.

These are the moments people often don’t see with assistance dogs in training. It is not always flashy task work. Sometimes it is learning how to move through unpredictable environments, process weird noises, settle, recover, and make good choices in completely new spaces.

Needless to say… someone is now VERY tired and passed out the second we got home 💤

Good job, Yosh ❤️

Recovery has been messy, painful, frustrating, and slow.
But today, after 2 months and multiple surgeries, we finally made it back to the gym.

Yoshi quietly settled beside the equipment like she’d never missed a day, while hooman tried not to fall apart halfway through leg press.

Sometimes progress does not look big or dramatic. Sometimes it just looks like showing up again. 💙

Some days, the hardest thing in the world is simply staying alive and getting out of bed.

Today was one of those days.

But because of Yoshi, this hooman got up.

Not only did we get out of bed, we went out for a play and a run. We trained in places we don’t really like being in. We had breakfast together. Yoshi even got a puppuccino.

Then we went to the lake for a little sniff walk. We practised some obedience and people nearby stopped to watch, saying how amazing she was. Afterwards, we sat on a bench together, took selfies, had cuddles, and watched the ducks.

To most people, it probably just looked like a nice morning with a dog.

But for someone living with a whole bunch of things going on in their brain and body, this was a really big day.

Yoshi is not just tasks or training. She helps keep me connected to the world. She helps me keep going on the days that feel impossible.

And I do not think she will ever truly understand how much that means.

She got up on the couch gently.

A paw on my shoulder…

Then the lean…

And finally, a full chin.
Slowly. Gently.

Somehow, she knew I needed it.

She isn’t just my assistance dog.

She’s my everything.
My soul mate. 💙💚

Little paws… new shoes 🐾

Hooman put these on me and we went for a short toilet around 1km walk around the block.

I walked.
I sniffed.
I did my toilet business.
I did not lose a single shoe.

Important.
They stayed on the whole time. No spinny spinny like the other ones.

Also… I can SIT in these.
Back shoes didn’t feel weird, so I didn’t do the awkward hover sit.

I think hooman was very happy about that.

They do get dirty fast though…
I saw her come at them with a baby toothbrush like it was a crime scene.

Also the front looks a little worn already?
But I walked like a normal dog so… maybe that’s just life.

Overall verdict from me:
Comfortable. Wearable. Acceptable for important assistance dog duties.
Will continue testing. Will report back.

Also I got told I was a good and cool looking dog So this is a win.

Yoshi came to work with me today.
She’s not a perfect. She’s still learning too.

But today, she showed another dog how to move through the world.

Fire stairs. Loud hand dryers. Strange spaces.
Things that feel big when you’re young or unsure.

She didn’t make it disappear.
She just showed… it’s okay to keep going.

And sometimes, that’s all another dog needs.

The hooman use to work alone... Now she has a backup. We look the same, don’t we? 😎
