We are thrilled to announce the expansion of our leadership team, with the appointment of Ashley Alexander as Creative Strategy Director. Ashley joins the Ivy Social leadership team alongside founder and managing director, Emily Coates—the 2023 winner of Canberra Young Businesswoman of the Year.

“Ashley’s appointment is a significant milestone for Ivy Social,” said Emily Coates, founder and managing director. “His extensive experience and deep understanding of brand strategy and creative application will be invaluable as we expand our ability to deliver best-in-class social and digital marketing campaigns, ensuring our clients stay ahead in an increasingly competitive digital space.”

Ashley brings over 20 years’ experience in repositioning and elevating brands through creative marketing for some of Canberra’s most prominent institutions, including the National Gallery of Australia, the University of Canberra and The Australian National University. He also serves on the board for Brand Canberra with ACT Government, which works to explore strategic opportunities across government, business and industry to grow Canberra’s image and reputation.

I’m proud to be a female founder, with a team full of smart, creative and passionate women. Reflecting on International Women's Day, I acknowledge the challenges women face in the workplace.

In my early career, I remember:
😬 Being told that my voice was ‘too high-pitched’ to be taken seriously. He was trying to help, but I remember being taken aback that the pitch of my voice mattered.
🥲 Seeing females asked to cover reception desks and do menial admin tasks while males in equivalent roles were never asked.
🤐 Not speaking up in meetings—because I didn’t think people valued what I had to say.
👨🏼‍✈️ When working on the Air Force campaign, learning there were no Aussie female fast jet pilots. Why? Because women are not conditioned to believe it’s a career option available for them.

When I won Young Business Woman of the Year, I was honoured, however, a part of me resented that we even have our own awards. I look forward to that distinction being unnecessary because equality is the norm.

However, the reality is that women are underrepresented in leadership and director roles. Australian women earn an average of $28,425 less than men. But we also rise above, break barriers, and create our own opportunities.

Things are changing—thankfully, I also have these memories:
📣 Using my natural voice to deliver strategies and win pitches.
🍼 My husband being the first male at the University of Canberra to take extended parental leave, so I could run Ivy Social.
🙅🏻‍♂️ A boss calling out others for assuming the young female would provide admin support—when it wasn't part of her job.
🙋‍♂️ A male ex-boss often volunteering to cover the reception desk.
👩🏻‍✈️ Seeing our first two female ‘top guns’ take flight in 2017.
👩🏻‍🚀 Interviewing the first female Australian astronaut for a client campaign.
🤱🏻 Being in Zoom meetings where female founders are breastfeeding babies.
👏🏼 Supporting numerous tenacious female business owners to grow their brands online.

So, to the women who refuse to let anything hold them back and lift others as they climb—this day is for you. You are seen. You are heard. And you are unstoppable. 💛

We recently welcomed the lovely Lisa Toffolo as our new Performance Marketing Specialist, and we’re so glad to have her on the team! 👋

Originally hailing from digital agencies in the UK, Lisa brings over 12 years of expertise in online marketing. With a Bachelor of Science under her belt, Lisa offers a scientific data-driven approach to marketing using data analysis to make informed optimisations that help her clients achieve outstanding results.

While she may be a new team member, she’s certainly no stranger to the team at Ivy. In fact, we first met Lisa five years ago when she was our client at Canberra Centre! She then moved to the Sunshine Coast and started a digital marketing consultancy, where she worked in close partnership with our team on Meta and Google ad campaigns for a select number of our global e-commerce and national property clients.
