Via Dolce’s custom‑built outdoor gazebo in Garema Place, approved in 2023 and designed with the City Renewal Authority, has now been dismantled ahead of tonight’s midnight deadline.

The ACT Government recently changed its Outdoor Dining Toolkit for Garema Place to allow only umbrellas for outdoor dining, a move that has left Via Dolce “frustrated and baffled”. Local hospitality operators also say the ‘umbrellas only’ rule simply doesn’t work in Canberra’s cold winters.

Despite recent calls and a petition to reinstate the structure, the café has been told it won’t be allowed back.

Weekes said there was no hesitation from him when it came to the decision to remain in Canberra.

“It’s really exciting actually, and I want to repay the faith that the club has shown in me,” Weekes said. “There will be a few good years coming ahead, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

CD put the question ‘Has anyone been having to buy tickets to big concerts in Sydney that don’t travel to Canberra’ in two ACT-based Facebook groups, which garnered more than 100 responses.

CD also asked Business, Arts and Creative Industries minister Michael Pettersson, why he thinks international acts and major Australian tours and shows choose not to come to Canberra when announcing a national tour.

“Historically, some promoters have overlooked Canberra due to misconceptions about our market size or the perception that our venues aren’t large enough,” he said.

Have you travelled for concerts, theatre or arts shows or major sporting events? Let us know below.

I have just bought my third concert ticket for a show in Sydney for 2025, and my fourth in 12 months.
