Once locally extinct for 50 years, the Green and Golden Bell Frog has returned to Canberra!
Prior to the 1970s, Green and Golden Bell Frogs thrived in our waterways. However, by the mid-1980s, they were locally extinct as a result of chytrid fungus.
Because the pathogen can’t be removed from waterways, researchers at UC, ANU and Symbio Wildlife Park developed an approach to help the frogs persist in the presence of the disease.
While many of the released frogs were immunised against the pathogen, it’s hoped that the saunas and salted pools will be enough to support their offspring and the future releases that won’t be immunised.
