Once locally extinct for 50 years, the Green and Golden Bell Frog has returned to Canberra!

Prior to the 1970s, Green and Golden Bell Frogs thrived in our waterways. However, by the mid-1980s, they were locally extinct as a result of chytrid fungus.

Because the pathogen can’t be removed from waterways, researchers at UC, ANU and Symbio Wildlife Park developed an approach to help the frogs persist in the presence of the disease.

While many of the released frogs were immunised against the pathogen, it’s hoped that the saunas and salted pools will be enough to support their offspring and the future releases that won’t be immunised.

A koala has been recorded living inside a predator-proof wildlife sanctuary on Canberra’s doorstep.

The sighting is the first confirmed koala record on the property, which has been owned by the Larcombe family since the 1920s.

Motion-sensor cameras show the young koala spent two nights along the sanctuary’s southern boundary before being photographed in a tree by co-owner David Larcombe.

“It’s such a thrill — this is the first visual record of a koala at Wandiyali in our lifetimes,” Carolyn Larcombe told the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

“There was a single audio recording from three years ago which we suspect was a Koala, but this is the first time we’ve actually seen one.”
