Bus Stop Films

Bus Stop Films We use filmmaking to change community attitudes around the rights of people with disability. Bus Stop Films produces amazing films. How do we do we achieve this?
(1)

Bus Stops Films is an award winning, disability led organisation which has been in operation since 2009. With a primary focus supporting those living disabilities and others from marginalised communities, we use film studies education, filmmaking and the film industry to change community attitudes globally around the rights and contribution to society of and by people with disability and other mar

ginalised groups. We show that being inclusive doesn’t impact budgets, shoot times or the quality of a film, however enhances the experiences of cast, crew and audiences and changes community attitudes for the better. With now almost 50 short films made, winning more than 90 awards and screening in festivals and on streaming services around the world, to an audience to date of over 45M people, we are a viable and dynamic creative organisation. We EDUCATE
We deliver our Accessible Film Studies Program for adults living with disability in Sydney through the Australian Film and Radio School (AFTRS), in Parramatta through Western Sydney University (WSU), in Wollongong with the University of Wollongong and in Canberra with Screen Canberra, in Brisbane through Griffith Film School and Online. In 2022, we've added Blue Mountains, Melbourne and Adelaide as well. The 40-week film studies course teaches students key aspects of filmmaking – story development, script writing, lighting, sound, costume, camera techniques, producing and directing. Students work with their film studies tutor and support workers to develop a film idea which they shoot as part of the course. In 2022, we have our biggest student intake with almost 165 students enrolled in our 14 program streams. We CREATE
Our students work with award winning industry professionals to create amazing short films. We enter the films into Oscar qualifying festivals around the world, and we send students to festivals to walk the red carpet, introduce films and participate in industry panels. In recent years, we’ve sent students to the USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and interstate to represent the films they have made. In 2019, our films also screened on Foxtel and SBS and as part of Sydney’s Vivid festival. In 2021 we were supported by Screen QLD's RIDE strategy to produce "Sunshine" (In partnership with Taste Creative) which premiered at Brisbane International Film Festival and in 2019 we were a successful recipient of Screen NSW's Screenability funding, producing "Groundhog Night" for the Sydney Film Festival. We ADVOCATE
We campaign for greater representation of people with disability in the screen industry on both sides of the camera and drive a more inclusive society. We have supported our students into over 350 workplace opportunities. Our students have been employed on TVC’s, TV shows, feature films and filming corporate events. Companies who have employed our students including Disney on Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Endemol Shine working on Survivor and MasterChef, Fremantle Media and filming events for Accenture. Our students and staff are powerful advocates and undertake many speaking engagements at conferences, corporate training and events for organisations including Disney, Westpac, Comm Bank, Cushman & Wakefield and the United Nations.

Bus Stop Films celebrated its 16th birthday with a garden party at Admiralty House, hosted by Australia's Governor General, Her Excellency Sam Mostyn AC. Supported by endeared members of our community alongside our Patron Miguel Maestre and notable screen industry leaders, we marked an extraordinary year that included our first-ever feature film, Boss Cat. The morning tea featured opening remarks from both Sam Mostyn and Board Chair Peter Tonagh, along with an impassioned message from participant ambassador Audrey O'Connor, who has been a part of the Bus Stop community since its inception.

In a special moment, co-founders Genevieve Clay-Smith and Eleanor Winkler were acknowledged with medals from the Governor General in recognition of their journey from a Tropfest winning film to a thriving global organisation. CEO Tracey Corbin-Matchett OAM shared: 'This event celebrates our participants, parents, carers, and industry supporters along with our amazing team who continue to champion Bus Stop Films. With such talented and dedicated people supporting inclusion in our industry, the future is incredibly bright.'

We thank GG Sam and her amazing team for hosting our special event.

We're bringing Bella to Australia for the Driving Change Summit!! “Let's Get Cracking. Making my way in the industry” The Bella Roberts Experience!

Bella Roberts - Editorial Trainee on Netflix’s Adolescence and Viral Social Media Talent “Bella Does Editing”.

Bella is a London-based editor, film school graduate, and social media personality. Bella’s love of cinema as a child led to a fully-fledged pursuit of filmmaking in her teens. After developing her videography skills through short film content and YouTube vlogs, Bella realised her passion lay on the cutting room floor.

Bella sparked significant conversation about the challenges of breaking into the film and TV industry. Her viral series, "Day in the Life of a Runner," ignited discourse around working your way up in entry-level roles and how to successfully navigate the industry.
