This week on Radio Architecture we welcome ALEC TZANNES to the program!

Alec Tzannes is the Founding Director of Tzannes, a leading architecture and urban design practice based in Sydney, Australia. He established the studio’s distinctive design philosophy, with its emphasis on intellectual rigour, collaboration, sustainability and a strong sense of ethics.

Alec studied Architecture at the University of Sydney and later at Colombia University in New York. He served as Dean of the Built Environment at the University of New South Wales for nearly a decade and is now Professor Emeritus (Practice).

He established Tzannes in the early 1980s and it has grown to become a recognised leader in designing Australia’s built environment – from homes, workplaces, and institutions to large city-shaping projects. The practice’s work spans beyond the architecture of a building, seamlessly integrating across design disciplines.

Over the past 40 years, Tzannes’ commitment to design excellence has been recognised with over 200 international, national and state awards in all the specialised fields of design that the practice undertakes.

In 2006-7 Alec served as the National President of the Australian Institute of Architects and in 2018, was awarded the AIA’s Gold Medal, its highest accolade.

Join and Alec this wednesday night at 7pm live on !

This week on Radio Architecture we welcome NONDA KATSALIDIS & KARL FENDER to the studio!

Karl Fender OMA is a founding partner of the multi-disciplinary international design firm Fender Katsalidis, playing a pivotal role in exporting Australian architectural expertise to the global stage. His most significant recent international achievement is the design of Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Standing at 680 metres, this megatall skyscraper is the second-tallest building in the world. Fender’s leadership on this project underscored his ability to create culturally resonant landmarks, with the tower’s faceted diamond-shaped façade drawing inspiration from traditional Malaysian songket patterns and the silhouette of Tunku Abdul Rahman’s hand raised during the nation's independence declaration.

Nonda Katsalidis AM is best known for designing two of the Southern Hemisphere's most iconic supertall residential skyscrapers: the Eureka Tower and Australia 108. These landmarks serve as defining vertical markers of the city's modern identity. His versatility is further exemplified by the world-renowned Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart. In stark contrast to his soaring towers, MONA is a subterranean "anti-museum" carved into sandstone cliffs. Beyond his specific designs, Nonda’s legacy is cemented through his leadership at Fender Katsalidis, where he has championed advancements in advanced modular construction technology and urban design that continue to influence how Australians live.

This week on Radio Architecture we welcome SOFIA COLABELLA to the program!

Sofia is an architect and Senior Lecturer in Architectural Technology at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning of The University of Melbourne. As a registered architect (2002) with a PhD in Architectural Technology (2006), she co-founded and co-directed (2002-15) two research-based architecture practices specialising in structural, acoustic and interior design. Expert in timber lightweight structures and ecological digital design, she designed and built several timber gridshells and acoustic shells for open-air concerts (2007-15).

Her research explores the intersection of social equity, ecological sustainability, and the contemporary reinterpretation of traditional technologies, spanning four interconnected themes: 1) inclusive and future-ready design practice; 2) circular design; 3) upcycling waste in architecture; and 4) innovative teaching approaches, all grounded in a broader commitment to advancing gender equity in construction. Since 2016, she has been developing cross-industry research projects on upcycling waste in architecture through experimental prototyping.

Sofia is a member of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS), the IASS Hangai Prize Committee, the UEDLab and the Sustainable and Healthy Environments (SHE) Lab. She is a member and co-founder of the Advanced Digital Design + Fabrication (ADD+F) research hub.
