FROM NYIKINA COUNTRY TO HOLLYWOOD MADISON PRINCE TAKES FIRST NATIONS STORYTELLING TO THE WORLD

Nyikina filmmaker Madison Prince is taking First Nations storytelling onto the international stage with her directorial debut LEE selected for the prestigious, Oscar-qualifying LA Shorts International Film Festival in Los Angeles.

Working alongside her mother and longtime collaborator Sam Cook, Madison says culture, oral history and ownership remain at the centre of everything she creates.

“I want young mob watching my work back home to see that our stories have no ceiling.”

“You don’t have to dilute your cultural truth or identity to make work that compels other people internationally.”

Now Madison is turning to her own family history for her next feature project, exploring the story of her grandfather Stanley Ward, a First Nations man who challenged Australia’s Vietnam-era national service system, and her grandmother Philippa Cook.

For Madison, it all comes back to one thing:

“Ownership of our own voice is our biggest power.”
