104.1 CHY FM is a youth-oriented, volunteer-run community radio station based in Coffs Harbour, NSW. It has been operated by young people for young people, supporting the community through music, training and volunteering, since the 1st of December 1973. We are the first Youth Community FM Radio Station in Australia! It all began when local Salvation Army Pastor John Townsend recognised the need for opportunities to help regional youth develop life skills, build confidence and find their voice. His vision grew alongside the rise of community radio in Australia and thus, 104.1 CHY FM was born. The early days saw students run the station while John sourced resources and supervised. As popularity rose, 104.1 CHY FM grew into the award-winning not-for-profit organisation it is today! We are proud to have supported over 5,000 students, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in media and broadcasting! We love supporting the local music scene by playing music from unsigned local bands and performers. All of our music is programmed from our studios at Coffs Harbour which means we choose each day what to play and how often. Australian music is very important to 104.1 CHY FM. We play more than the minimum recommended by industry bodies, helping ensure Aussie talent is recognised and supported by the community.
